No, More Running Probably Isnt Bad for You
Don t run less hard. Don t run less often.Dont run less distance. And dont be persuaded by underpowered medical studies — a habit that really could harm your health. I say this in response to a recent study suggesting that too much strenuous jogging (剧烈跑) shortens your life. The conclusions, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, have received wide attention this week.
Let s start by taking a closer look at what the study actually says. The researchers asked Danish runners about the speed, frequency and duration of their workouts, categorizing 878 of them as light, moderate or strenuous joggers. Ten years later, the researchers checked government records to see how many of them had died. Happily, only 17 had.
Nonetheless, the study claimed that too much jogging was associated with a higher death rate. At a literal level, the death rate was highest among those who ran the most and at the highest intensity. But the evidentiary basis for this claim is weak. It is based on 40 people who were categorized as“strenuous joggers”— among whom only two died.
The conclusions that received so much attention were based on a grand total of two deaths among strenuous joggers. As Alex Hutchinson of Runner s World wrote, “Thank goodness a third person didn t die, or public health authorities would be banning jogging.”
The death rate among moderate joggers was also higher than that for light joggers, but given that there were fewer than 10 deaths among either category, this difference could not be reliably discerned from the effects of chance.
Indeed, none of the comparisons between those who run a lot versus a little, frequently versus infrequently, or fast versus slow, were statistically significant, even after adjusting for potential factors like age, gender, education, diabetes, smoking and drinking. Besides, the researchers did not compare runners with non- runners, but rather with the subgroup of non- runners who lead the most sedentary (久坐不动) lives. The British newspaper The Telegraph blared the headline that“Fast running is as deadly as sitting on couch, scientists find.”The Telegraph was largely repeating the studys authors, who say that“strenuous joggers have a death rate not statistically different from that of the sedentary group.”In fact, on every measure, those who run farther, faster or more frequently recorded a lower death rate than nonrunners.
If you feel there s a drumbeat of evidence accumulating about the risks of running too far, because youve heard similar conclusions before, it is worth putting the noise into context: It comes from the same place. As Runners World has noted, these same data were already published a few years back in a separate study. Moreover, other studies supporting this idea come from the same author.
To get a sense of what we are learning, let me recommend a careful review of the literature, written by Mr. Hutchinson, a physicist- turnedwriter. His conclusion:“Running an hour a day is certainly no less healthy, and probably a bit healthier, than running less.”Armed with that more accurate assessment of the science, I hope to see you on the running trails.

Report Sees Weak Security in Cars Wireless Systems
WASHINGTON — Serious gaps in security and customer privacy affect nearly every vehicle that uses wireless technology, according to a report set to be released on Monday by a senators office.
The report concludes that security measures to prevent hackers from gaining control of a vehicle s electronics are“haphazard, ”and that the majority of automakers do not have systems that can detect breaches ( 破坏) or quickly respond to them.
“Drivers have come to rely on these new technologies, but unfortunately the automakers havent done their part to protect us from cyber attacks or privacy invasions, ”said the senator, Edward J. Markey, Democrat of Massachusetts, whose office published the report after obtaining detailed information from 16 automakers.
The report also found that large amounts of data on driving histories are harvested, frequently without consumers being well aware that the information is being collected or how it will be used.At least nine automakers use third-party companies to collect vehicle data, which can make consumers even more vulnerable, and some transmit that data to third-party data centers too. The information collected includes where drivers have been, like physical location recorded at regular intervals, the last location they were parked, distances and times traveled, and previous destinations entered into navigation systems. A host of diagnostic data on the car is also captured.
The findings in the report are based on information received from BMW, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Porsche, Subaru, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo.respond to the requests.
Technological innovations for vehicles are expanding rapidly. At the same time, connecting cars to the Internet means that more vehicles have smartphonelike interfaces that allow for new possibilities, but also carry inherent risks.
In November, two auto industry trade groups— the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and the Association of Global Automakers —tried to address consumer concerns by publishing a set of voluntary privacy principles aimed at limiting the use of vehicle data for marketing purposes.
Wade Newton, a spokesman for the trade group, said “ automakers believe that strong consumer data privacy protections and strong vehicle security are essential to maintaining the continued trust of our customers”and cited the November principles as a way that the industry was taking proactive steps.
“Auto engineers incorporate security solutions into vehicles from the very first stages of design and production — and security testing never stops, ”he said.
Auto companies post privacy policies in their owners manuals and on corporate websites, he said, and they“pledge to provide heightened protections to the most sensitive types of consumer information — protections that go beyond similar principles in other industry sectors”.
28. According to the passage, weak security in cars wireless system is caused by the following factors except ________.
A.a lack of security measures

D.careless driving
29. In Edward J. Markeys opinion, who is to blame for cyber attacks or privacy invasion?

D.hackers.
30. The underlined word“haphazard”in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ________.

Never be limited by other people s limited imaginations. If you adopt their attitudes, then the possibility wont exist because youll have already shut it out. You can hear other people s wisdom, but youve got to re-evaluate the world for yourself.
When I turned sixteen, my Ghanian parents sold all of our earthly possessions and bought me a plane ticket back to America where we’d lived years earlier. I would have a better life than those before me.
When I returned to the States, I had fire in my blood. I was ready to take on the world. I was unstoppable. I traveled south to Florence, South Carolina, where I would finish high school.
On the first day of school, Ms. Smith, my English teacher, announced that an African was amongst us. I honestly didnt know she was talking about me. After all, I’d never been called“the African.”She walked over to my desk and told me to stand up.
“Good day, ”I said proudly, after a moments hesitation.“I bring greetings to you all from Ghana. I am Mary Akua Spio.”
My words fell like laughing gas bombs. With each syllable, the class laughed louder and louder.
“Mary? What about Obtunde or something like that? What? Did you change your name at the airport?”one student yelled out.
“You speak English good for an Afkan, ”another student quipped. Doesn t she mean, “I speak English well”? I thought to myself.
“What did you do with the tree you lived in when you left Africa?”I remember one student yelling.
Hoping to return control to the class, Ms. Smith interrupted.“So, Mary, what are your dreams?”
Blinking back tears, I answered, “A rocket scientist.”Once again the class exploded into laughter.
“Oh dear! Thats like saying you want to be the Easter Bunny! You ought to study something like physical education. Besides, you gotta be real smart to be any kind of scientist!”Ms. Smith was now having her own fun with me.
Things got worse when I was put back into basic algebra although I had completed physics and calculus courses in Ghana. I felt hopeless. If they were right, if my IQ really was low, what could my future possibly hold?
After graduation, I earned enough money to attend college full time. I studied hard, received an additional scholarship and headed off to Syracuse University to study electrical engineering.
Several years later, it was time for my senior design review, the event every engineer dreads. As the review panel (审查组) approached Lab Station10, the head of the panel asked in a booming voice, “Whose lab station is this?”I hesitated for a few seconds, biting my lips, tears not far from my eyes, and I answered their question with these words, “Ahem ... mine.”I glanced over at Don Shaw, our lab instructor, wondering if he had a better answer for the review board. Smiling through tears of his own, he nodded in encouragement.
The panel drilled me about my design. I I spoke slowly, answering their questions, but soon the words flowed with the inspiration and reason behind my senior design project. My words were not perfect, but this time I knew they were beautiful. I didnt want to stop speaking. I wanted to be heard forever. Later that week, I learned I would be graduating number one in my electrical engineering class.
After leaving Syracuse University, I continued on to Georgia Tech for graduate studies in deep space communications. I have since worked on heat- seeking probes for the NASA SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) program, designed orbits for rockets bearing communication satellites, sent a rocket into space with my signature on it, and engineered technology that allowed George Lucas to deliver Star Wars episode II digitally. The Boeing Company recently bought and patented ( 专利) four of my inventions in deep space science.
Maybe, through teasing, the class back in California caught a glimpse of the woman I would ultimately become: Mary A. Spio, independent inventor and American rocket scientist. Something unbelievable.

Dear Headmaster,
Knowing that our school is going to build a school history museum, I d like to give some suggestions about what can be displayed in it.
Do you think it a good idea to put the photos of the graduates per year in the cupboards? The school is the place where they ever studied and from which they graduated. Besides, exhibiting the awards our school has received in different fields may be another way, because they indicate the achievements our school has gained in different periods. In addition, I tend to suggest introducing some outstanding teachers and students, because what they have achieved not only stands for their own glory but also the school s. They give us encouragement and motivation to pursue our dreams.
I would really appreciate it if you can take my suggestions into consideration.
