1 CET4 改革对大学英语翻译教学的影响及翻译人才需求

自2013年12月起, 全国大学英语四、六级考试试卷结构和测试题型发生改变, 其中, 四级考试中翻译部分的考试内容由原来的句子翻译改为段落翻译, 考试比重由原来的5%上升到15%。改革后的段落翻译考察知识面广泛, 包含中国文化、历史、经济社会发展等, 四级翻译字数为140~160个汉字。这次翻译内容的变革将不仅对学生翻译能力的考察提高到一个新高点, 而且对目前的大学英语翻译教学提出新挑战, 也对翻译教材改革形成新考验。

从市场需求来看, 在信息化时代背景下, 社会经济的快速发展不仅仅需要单一的专门人才, 而催生了市场对多元化的翻译人才的更大需求, , 即要求具备专业知识和英语翻译能力的复合型人才。在大学英语教学中, 需要对非英语专业学生的翻译能力进一步加强培养和提高, 对作为输入来源的翻译教材及翻译教学实践提出更高的要求。

2 翻译教材与翻译教学实践的局限性

英汉或汉英翻译教材近30年来蓬勃发展, 在质和量上均有极大提高。市场上不乏非英语专业的翻译教材。但香港中文大学李德凤教授在一次问卷调查 (陶友兰, 2006) 中指出, 目前的翻译教材“重复太多, 新意不足, 由于编者不知道教学理论, 所以, 大部分教材都是‘填鸭式’教学思想的产物;而且教材质量参差不齐;商业化倾向严重”。此外, 国内大学英语翻译课程的设置处于尴尬的境地。虽然2007年《大学英语课程教学要求》中对翻译能力有具体要求, 可是针对非英语专业学生进行的翻译教学不受重视。高等院校尤其本科院校并不为非英语专业学生独自设置翻译课程。据李忠华 (2007) 统计认为面向大学英语教学的翻译课程几乎无一例外地被设置为公共选修课, 甚至有些院校根本就没有设置面向全院大学英语教学翻译理论和实践课程。以上事实使得大学英语翻译教材在翻译教学中无法充分发挥其价值, 翻译教学实践也无法展开。因此, 可以转向大学英语教材, 尤其是综合英语教材, 使其在学生的翻译学习中发挥作用, 另辟蹊径。

大学英语教材是非英语专业学生学习英语的主要工具。在非英语专业基础阶段学习的所有课程中, 综合英语课程占很大的比重, 在提高学生英语综合能力、促进学生全面发展方面起着十分重要的作用。在教学中, 教师主要依托综合英语教材组织教学。目前, 大多数高校现行的大学英语综合英语教材有《新视野大学英语读写教程《》新世纪大学英语综合教程《》大学英语 (精读) 》等, 这些教材中的翻译比重很低, 只有汉译英单句翻译练习及少量的段落翻译, 仅在练习中只提供了少量的参考词汇与短语。这些教材中均无涉及翻译技巧或翻译方法。因此, 有必要对大学英语综合英语教材中的翻译任务进行研究, 有必要探讨较为合理的翻译任务设计, 进一步完善外语学习任务设计, 进一步深化大学英语教学改革。

3 大学英语综合英语教材翻译任务研究之设想

3.1 综合英语教材翻译任务定义

大学英语综合英语教材翻译任务设计是外语学习任务设计的一部分。国内学者对外语学习任务设计也进行了相关的研究, 但是对大学英语综合英语教材翻译任务的研究较为少见。我国学者夏纪梅 (2002) 探讨了英语教材练习/任务设计的认知标准和交际性标准。华维芬 (2010) 也提出任务是指为了促进语言学习所作的努力。戎林海和李静 (2010) 提出了六模块的翻译教材编写理念, 其中包含翻译的基础知识、翻译理论知识、翻译的技巧与方法、描述英译汉和汉译英的特殊结构及各种篇章文体的翻译策略。该文中的翻译任务指的是为全面提高英语翻译能力所做的全部努力。

3.2 综合英语教材翻译任务研究设计

作为非英语专业的学生, 在打好扎实的英语语言基本功和牢固掌握相关专业知识的前提下, 更需要注重培养其英语综合应用能力, 使他们在今后学习、工作和社会交往中能用英语有效地进行交际, 同时增强其自主学习能力, 提高综合文化素养, 以适应我国社会发展和国际交流的需要 (《大学英语课程教学要求》, 以下简称《要求》, 2007) 。该文将围绕这一目标, 不仅要注重学生翻译技能和语言知识的培养, 更要注重学生文化素养的提高、自主学习和思考能力的培养, 旨在探讨较为合理的翻译任务设计, 适合非英语专业学生的翻译学习并通过翻译实践来提高其翻译能力, 以便提高大学英语四级考试的效度, 进一步推动大学英语教学改革;并且使当代大学生学习中国传统文化知识, 对外介绍中国及其历史, 促进中外文化交流。

该文拟从以下两个方面展开: (1) 对教师和学生分别进行关于综合英语教材翻译任务设计需求的问卷调查及分析; (2) 根据以上师生对翻译任务设计需求分析的调查结果, 选取两套现行的大学英语综合英语教材依据外语学习任务的设计原则和相关翻译理论进行全新的翻译任务设计。研究设计如下。

第一, 大学英语综合英语教材翻译任务设计的理论框架及构成要素。参照《大学英语课程要求》 (2007) , 该框架由以下7个板块构成, 即英汉文化素养与背景知识、英汉语言知识与应用能力、外语教学理论、翻译理论与翻译方法、不同文体的翻译策略、自主学习能力和思维能力。其中, 英汉语言知识与应用能力板块和翻译理论和翻译方法板块处于核心地位, 其他5个板块贯穿其中。

第二, 基于该框架, 对使用《新视野大学英语读写教程》 (1~4册) (2008, 郑树棠主编, 外语教学与研究出版社) 和《新世纪大学英语综合教程》 (1~4 册) (2007, 秦秀白主编, 上海外语教育出版社) 的教师和学生分别进行关于综合英语教材翻译任务内容设计需求的问卷调查, 选取郑州升达经贸管理学院, 华中农业大学, 郑州大学各发放100份综合英语教材翻译任务的调查问卷, 并对部分师生进行访谈, 旨在了解师生对所用教材翻译任务设计的需求, 突出以学生为中心的理念, 使师生与任务设计达到和谐。

第三, 依据该框架, 对以上2套现行的大学英语综合英语教材翻译内容进行研究并设计出全新的翻译任务指令及任务文本, 从而使上述两套教材的任务在最大程度上涵盖或体现了上述7大板块的要素内容。

第四, 该文在上述两套教材的基础上并依据教材中不同的单元主题编纂出两套较为完整的符合外语任务设计原则和师生认知需求的翻译任务文本, 对综合英语教材翻译任务设计提出相应的建议, 以期促进当前的大学英语四级翻译改革, 及大学英语教学改革。

4 结语

国内关于翻译教材的研究主要围绕人才培养模式、教学策略及教材编写内容展开, 鲜有学者对综合英语教材中翻译内容的学习任务设计进行专门研究。该文的研究对象《新视野大学英语读写教程》与《新世纪大学英语综合教程》均为优秀的第五代教材, 其中的翻译任务指令研究及任务文本设计乏善可陈。教学一线的英语教师们亟需此两套教材中翻译任务指令研究及有效地任务文本内容。该文的综合英语教材翻译任务研究设计为未来教材的翻译任务文本设计的选择与更新提供一些新的视角, 有助于高等院校的大学英语教材翻译任务的研究、设计和选择, 有助于高校英语教师寻找到更适合本校师生的大学英语综合英语教材翻译任务文本, 推动教学改革的发展。另一方面, 该文研究设计将促进第五代英语教材中翻译任务的修订与改善, 有助于编写人员更科学、系统地制定出具有中国特色的外语教材, 促进大学英语教材改革和发展。

1、网上报名流程示意如下:

①考生登录湖南省CET报名系统http:///cet; ②点击右下角的“报名请进”;

③认真阅读《CET考试简介》和《CET考生守则》后,点击“同意签订此协议,诚信参加考试”,并签署网上《考试诚信承诺书》(必须签署《考试诚信承诺书》方可报名);

焦虑可分为正焦虑(facilitating anxiety)和负焦虑(debilitating anxiety)(Barley:1983)。Horwitz(1986)等人发现,在外语课堂上,焦虑的学生不主动要求发言,不积极甚至逃避参与课堂上的各种活动,由于过于焦虑、着急,甚至害怕而心跳、出汗,忘记了自己本来会的内容,还有一些焦虑的学习者把注意力集中在学习任务上,这使得他们无法吸收语言输入,因此焦虑感越强的学生外语学习成绩往往越低。Mac Intyre&Gardner(1994)、Horwitz&Young(1991)的研究结果表明,焦虑感不仅会影响外语总成绩,而且对外语学习的一些具体方面也产生副作用。中国的吴一安,刘润清与Jeffrey(1993)合作对中国英语本科学生的素质进行了一次综合性调查,焦虑感是调查中17个自变量中的一个,调查结果表明:焦虑感基本上不影响中国英语专业大学生的英语学习成绩。

阅读理解在CET4中占总分权重的40%。影响学生阅读的因素是多方面的,归纳起来主要有两大类:语言性因素和非语言性因素。非英语专业大学生外语阅读差异不仅反映在非控制的智力因素上,也反映在可控制的重要情感因素之一即语言阅读焦虑因子上。焦虑常与不自在、沮丧、自我怀疑、忧惧相联系(Brown,2002)。语言焦虑与课堂语言学习有关,是在语言过程中产生的独特而复杂的自我认识、信念、情感以及行为(Horwitz,1991)。如果外语学习反复给学习者带来焦虑,则焦虑可能变成一种品质焦虑导致紧张不安和害怕,从而影响学习精力和注意力,使用于思考和记忆的能量相对减少,语言储存和输出效果降低。外语阅读焦虑是个非常复杂的现象,涉及到诸多因素,如学习者的性格特征,语篇词汇覆盖率及语篇的熟悉度,文化因素等。

本研究从英语阅读焦虑出发,探讨非英语专业大学生CET4阅读成绩与阅读焦虑的关系,以利于英语教学者在英语阅读教学中采取一些积极的策略,尽量降低非英语专业学习者的负面阅读焦虑。

一、研究方法

1. 研究问题。

本研究试图通过实验回答以下问题:(1)非英语专业大学生外语阅读焦虑感等级分布如何,是否具有普遍性?(2)非英语专业大学生外语阅读焦虑是否存在性别差异?(3)非英语专业大学生外语阅读焦虑与CET4阅读理解成绩的关系?

2. 被试。

本研究的对象是185名来自一所本科院校非英语专业大二的学生,他们刚参加完CET4。其中女生95人,男生90人。

3. 实验材料。

该研究所用的测量工具有两个。一是CET4试卷,试卷中阅读理解成绩作为因变量。二是在Satio(1999)的外语阅读焦虑量表的基础上,作者自己修正的外语阅读理解焦虑量表,用它来调查这些学生的外语阅读焦虑和CET4阅读理解几个关系。为了更好地探究非英语专业学生的外语阅读焦虑状况与CET4阅读之间的关系,本研究还采用了一些定性研究的手段,如记录与学生之间的一些非正式的关于外语阅读焦虑和CET4阅读的对话,随后加以分析和解释。这些定性研究内容旨在为定量研究提供补充数据和解释。

二、结果与讨论

1. 外语阅读焦虑程度。

根据被试的英语阅读焦虑量表标准分,将非英语专业大学生的外语阅读焦虑感分为低、中、高三个等级。从下页表1可知非英语专业大学生阅读焦虑情况:英语阅读焦虑感具普遍性,中、高焦虑程度的非英语专业大学生占78.4%,外语阅读轻度焦虑感的学习者只占21.6%,这一现状应引起广大教师和语言研究者的重视。

2. 外语阅读焦虑感的性别差异检验。

表2显示,非英语专业男女大学生在外语阅读焦虑和CET4阅读理解成绩上有非常显著的性别差异(p<0.01),女生在CET4阅读理解中的得分普遍高于男生。

3. 外语阅读焦虑与CET4阅读理解成绩的关系。

通过对不同英语阅读焦虑感和非英语专业大学生的CET4阅读理解成绩进行方差分析,来考察不同焦虑感学习者的CET4阅读理解成绩差异,结果(见表3)。F=38.65,P<0.001,可见非英语专业大学生的英语阅读焦虑感和他们的CET4阅读理解成绩呈负相关,相关系数为-0.556。不同外语阅读焦虑感的非英语专业大学生的CET4阅读理解成绩有显著差异,阅读焦虑感越强,CET4阅读理解成绩则越低。

4. 讨论。

访谈内容显示:外语阅读虽不像外语口语那样会引起英语学习者的高度焦虑,但外语阅读焦虑在非英语专业大学生中具普遍性;英语学习者阅读也受个人因素的影响,如对阅读难易程度的感知、对自我阅读能力的评价等。非英语专业大学生在外语学习过程中,中、高度阅读焦虑感的学生占总数的78.4%,这与外语学习本身有关。

本研究考察了非英语专业学习者外语阅读焦虑的性别差异,其研究结果与以往有些相关研究的结论不一致,但与国内王才康(2003)的研究结论一致,这可能与研究被试的选取,研究工具的不同,尤其研究被试的社会文化背景差异有关系。

不同外语阅读焦虑程度的非英语专业学习者的CET4阅读理解成绩存在显著差异,焦虑程度高的学生与焦虑程度低的学生CET4阅读理解成绩差异显著。非英语专业大学生的CET4阅读理解成绩与英语阅读焦虑呈负相关,相关系数高达-0.566。根据Krashen(1985)[15]的语言输入和情感过滤假说,对语言习得而言,有两个必要条件:首先学习者必须接触到足够的可理解的语言输入,其次学习者的情感过滤必须适度。

结语

情感、学习环境、学习风格和学习策略等是语言焦虑产生的因素。焦虑作为英语学习中的一种普遍现象,应该引起英语教师的充分重视,努力做到尊重每一个学生,多了解他们的不同个性、学习程度,帮助学生更多了解英语国家的文化和习俗,并对非英语专业大学生进行相应的阅读策略培训,使其在学习中降低外语阅读焦虑程度或者把焦虑转化成阅读成功的积极体验。
