语音学主要是研究人类所能发出来的所有声音,属于语言学的主要分支之一。而英语语音歧义主要发生在说英语的过程中,常常由单词的同音异义所引起。比如:They are [s?藜ui?耷].我们可以理解为They are sowing.(他们正在播种)也可以理解为They are sewing.(他们正在缝制衣服)事实上,由英语语音引起的英语歧义可以归纳为以下6个方面:同音异义、连读、失去爆破、重音位置不明确、停顿位置不明确和音调高低不明确。本文结合例子从以上6个方面论述由英语语音引起的英语歧义。
一、同音异义引起歧义
同音异义词,是指两个或两个以上发音相同而拼写和意义不同的单词或词组。比如:sew and sow,deer and dear。在我们说英语的过程中,非常容易产生歧义。如果你曾经读过《爱丽丝梦游仙境》,肯定会对Alice and the Mouse之间一段非常有意思的对话有印象:
“Mine is a long and sad tale!” said the Mouse, turning to Alice and sighing.
“It’s a long tail, certainly,” said Alice, looking with wonder at the Mouse’s tail, “but why do you call it sad?”
在这里主要运用了一对同音异义词“tale and tail”,增强了文章的幽默感、可读性和趣味性。
二、连读引起歧义
在同一意群中,前一词以辅音音素结尾,后一词以元音音素开头,在说话或朗读句子时,习惯上很自然地将这两个音素合拼在一起读出来,这种语音现象叫连读。如:We have an English friend. 这个句子有两处连读:前一处是have的尾辅音/v/与an的开头元音/?藜/,连读为/v?藜/;后一处是an的尾辅音/n/与English的开头音素/i/连读为/ni/。由于连读现象的存在,不同的单词连读在一起可能与其他的单词有相同的发音而产生歧义。
三、失去爆破引起歧义
在单词或连贯的语句中,一个爆破音后面紧接着有一个爆破音时,前面一个音只按其发音部位形成阻碍,但不发生爆破,这种现象称为“不完全爆破”或“失去爆破”。比如, clapboard 读成[''kl?覸b?蘅:d],也会造成歧义。
四、重音位置不明确引起歧义
(英)克鲁特登在他的《吉姆森英语语音教程》中讲道:“句子的重音主要是强调说话者最想表达的意思的传递。”根据他的重音规则,如果我们不能准确地判断哪个单词或句子需要重读,就会产生歧义。比如:“Good day!”有两层含义“How are you?” or “Good bye.”如何正确理解,主要根据它的重音所在:若重音在“day”,意思就是前者“最近怎么样”;若“Good” and “day”都强调,则表示后者的意思。在说英语的过程中能够非常清楚地表达我们所要强调的部分,但是在书面英语中,读者不知道重音所在,往往会造成歧义。比如:书面英语中an English teacher,我们可以理解为a teacher of English or an Eng?鄄lish person who teaches,如果重音在“English”上,其含义为英语教师;如果重音在“teacher”上,则表示一位英国的教师。
五、停顿位置不明确引起歧义
在书面英语中,如果不知道如何给句子断句,将不能正确理解该句子,比如:She gave her baby pictures.如果我们在baby之前停顿,意思就是baby附属于 pictures,我们会理解为She gave someone baby pictures;如果是停顿在baby之后,就应理解为She gave pictures to her baby.由此可见,停顿位置不一样,对句子的理解也不一样,常常会引起书面英语的歧义。
六、音调高低不明确引起歧义
当我们看到I beg your pardon.这句话时,如果不知道说话者的语调,很难正确理解说话者的真正含义。如果说话者用的是升调,则表示说话者没有听清楚对方的意思,希望对方再说一遍;相反,如果用的是降调,则说话者是在表示抱歉,希望得到对方的谅解。不言而喻,有时语调也可以反映说话者的目的。如果同一个句子用不同的语调表达不同的意思,则容易产生歧义。
综上所述,书面英语中不会产生歧义的句子,英语口语中由于同音异义、连读、失去爆破则会产生歧义;相反,由于重音位置不明确、停顿位置不明确和音调高低不明确,英语口语中不会产生歧义的句子在书面英语中则会产生歧义。因此,在我们使用英语的过程中应注意由于语音因素的几个方面带来的歧义,尽量避免歧义,提高理解和运用语言的能力,促使沟通交流顺利进行。

二、培养学生参与课堂教学的意识
学习知识的最佳途径是自己去发现,因为这种发现,理解最深,也最容易掌握其中的内在规律、性质和联系。与此同时,学生的思维才能得到真正的锻炼,才能真正体现 出学生的主体地位 。因此,在英语教学中,教师可以有意识地精心设计一些对理解课文有帮助,又有趣味的内容,在启发、质疑、解疑的过程中,指导学生自己去尝试发现问题、提出问题,并参与解决问题 ,探索研究问题,努力使学生更多、更主动地参与学习的全过程 ,从而提高学生的主体参与意识和能力。
三、教师对学生要有合理的评价

葛传椝认为:“朗读帮助你养成好的发音和语调,而好的发音和语调对于一切学习语言者是必需的。朗读帮助你发现某些在你的默读中可能见不到的语言优点。”当今社会对大学毕业生使用英语的实际水平要求提高了,尤其是会话和演讲水平。Lee认为朗读是连接会话和演讲的纽带,是通往演讲的桥梁。张颂也曾说过,“辩才”如果未从朗读中获益,成长的道路定是倍尝艰辛的。因此,由朗读课取代传统的语音课很可能成为未来语音教学的发展趋势。林韶蓉研究发现模仿朗读者语音感知和产出能力皆强于习惯朗读者。朗读注重实效和产出,通过朗读训练语音可以达到事半功倍的效果,让学习者能更轻易地发现自己在会话语流中出现的问题,也更容易拥有成就感。然而,中国人在人际交往中比较爱面子,怕出丑,尤其在语言学习中更是缺乏自信,因此英语课堂上往往教师讲得多,学生说得少。如果在英语学习入门时就以朗读开始,学生往往能积累更多的词句表达、文化知识和语音感知,同时也利于培养学生的信心。
然而,朗读课不是传统语音课,根据纪玉华和许其潮对朗读艺术课程的理解,朗读课和传统语音课的区别主要体现在:在教学内容上,朗读课把语篇朗读规则和技巧作为课堂内容精讲细练,而非依照“音素——语流——语调”的顺序展开;从进度安排看,朗读课遵循中国学生的“序”,把中国学生普遍较难接受的音素和技巧放在后面教授;从教学重点看,朗读课注重实用,理论从简,浓缩音素的讲解,突出朗读在各类体裁作品中的音际关系和音韵要素处理方法;从教学形式上看,朗诵课形式灵活多样,讲故事、诗歌朗诵、演讲、戏剧表演均可出现在课堂上。在此认识基础上,我们把朗读的学习重点放在训练音际关系处理能力,同时培养音韵直觉和意识,使学习者的英语发音听起来顺耳且可懂度高。(纪玉华,许其潮,2001)。
用于进行朗读训练的语篇需要谨慎选择,建议首选经典诵读材料。学习者可以根据自己的兴趣爱好搜集文本和音频,学习国外语文经典也是不错的选择,如《美国语文读本》和《英国语文读本》,措辞考究、主题多样,充满了人文关怀,能让学生领略到西方传统的思想教育对个人成长的作用,可谓一举多得。学习者也可以根据自己的英式美式发音偏好选择音频,例如《新概念英语》有些APP有两种发音可供模仿,国外经典学前动画片在国内网站也能找到不少,如代表美式发音的《爱探险的朵拉》和代表英式发音的《粉红猪小妹》。
以朗读作为学生打下语音基础的主要手段要求教师和学生宁拙毋巧,放弃对“捷径”的期望和幻想,脚踏实地,从对每一篇语篇的模仿朗读做起。但是朗讀需要建立在理解的基础上,不止是语法语义上的理解,也包括对发音技巧的理解。教师在学生理解语篇的过程中必须发挥指导的作用,言简意赅的讲解和生动的跨语言比较往往有利于学生的理解。例如“Ive got to go.”除了美式用法中的have got to表示“不得不”,等同于英式的have to,学生还必须了解到缩约后的前两个词的发音长度缩为一个音节,整个句子的重音落在go,而got to之间的两个相同的双唇爆破清辅音只发一个,且效果是清音不送气,或者在美式发音中叫做闪音。学生也许一时难以模仿,教师可用中文“我得走了。”进行比较,重音是“走”,与英文一致,“我得”的发音长度比单独发音要短,显示出了母语对英语这门外语的正迁移,学生可以获得更多感悟,最终顺利模仿。又如,教师需要和学生解释语调的表态功能。举以下对话为例:
A:Would you like some coffee or tea? B:Mm?
A:Would you like to take a cup of coffee or tea? B:Mm…
A:Coffee is on special offer,would you take one? B:Mm.
A:How do you like it? B:Mm. It tastes different!
四个Mm的语调不尽相同,分别表示没听清、考虑、肯定和赞叹,教师可以用中文的语调进行类比,也可以单纯地强化情境,和学生用英语解释一遍不同的Mm的不同涵义。并且请学生主动模仿和表演,令其感同身受,逐渐内化此情境中的四种语调。
理解过后,学生需要多次的模仿,由于朗读材料的多样性,学生可以通过演练结合避免枯燥的操练。假如语篇是一首英语手指童谣,如Five Little Monkeys,学生完全可以在读熟后加入手指动作,边操练语音边比划手指;如果语篇是一则对话,学生可以进行角色表演;如果语篇是一个故事,如A Very Hungry Caterpillar,学生可以声情并茂地将其叙述得淋漓尽致;如果语篇是一则演讲,如I Have A Dream,学生则有机会模仿演讲者在台上掷地有声地表达自己的观点,向听众呼吁;如果语篇是一首诗,如Saying Good-bye to Cambridge Again,学生可以向经典致敬,抒发感情;如果语篇是配音文本,如Titanic,学生则可以通过扮演不同的角色,在银幕中体会人物悲喜。
模仿过后,若朗读材料是名篇,教师则可以建议学生背诵,把经典内化为自己的财富,转化为自身的语言素养和文化储备,而且忆诵出来时学生对于发音技巧的把握会更加熟练,也能深切感受到语言从内心流淌出来时充满个性自由的处理过程,而熟练的忆诵能使学生更快掌握语言的节奏和音际关系,加速语音感知的内化。
朗读课上教师对学生的评价不能只为了记录成绩,应当把评价视为对学生的指引和鼓励,具体表现在教师对学生努力的肯定,和对他们未掌握或掌握得不好的发音技巧的具体建议。如教师发现学生在朗读中对/s/和/?/容易混淆,则可以建议学生学习以下绕口令:He sells seashells on the seashore while she sells seashells,cherry and sandshoes on the seashore.或者推荐歌曲Baa baa black sheep给学生学习。为了让学生的语音学习之路充满成就感,作业的检测可以通过学生的表演呈现,也可以让学生递交自己的录音或录像,过一段时间可以将优秀学生作品发布在网络平台上共享,举行一个歌手赛或者品诗会也是不错的检测手段,还可以激励学生努力学习语音语调,奉献出更优秀的作品。
综上所述,朗读是英语语音学习的诸多方法中传统而又充满新意的一种,需要教师和学生在实践中不断探究,最终走出一条适用的道路。
