1 功能思想和语境

功能思想是系统功能语言学的核心。Halliday(1994)认为语言有三大纯理功能:概念(ideational)功能、人际(interpersonal)功能和语篇(textual)功能。概念功能由及物性系统(transitivity)和语态(voice)系统实现,指作者或说话者如何对客观世界和内心世界进行描述;人际功能通过语气系统(mood)和情态系统(modality)实现,指作者或说话者如何构建参与者之间的社会关系,表明其对相关事态所采取的态度;语篇功能则由主位(theme)系统、信息系统(information)和衔接(cohesion)系统实现,它被用来分析新信息和旧信息在语篇中的分布和互动情况,并由此确定作者或说话者的语篇重点和语篇信息的推进方式(朱永生,2006)。

这三个纯理功能受制于情景语境和文化语境(Halliday1994)。文化语境由情景语境实现,情景语境由词汇-语法实现词汇-语法最后由音系系统(口语)或拼写系统(书面语言)实现(Martin,1992;Eggins,1994)。

2 所选语料及其语境分析

该文所用的语料是美国总统奥巴马2009年5月13日在亚利桑那州立大学毕业典礼的上的演讲。全文篇幅为3258个单词,151个自然句,321个小句。从文化语境上来讲,这篇演讲发生在全世界唯一超级大国——美国。当时美国正面临多重困境:国内经济衰退、国外纷争不断、全球性的气候环境恶化。在这个背景下,总统奥巴马来到即将走向社会的毕业生中间,表达对他们成就真正事业的热切期望。该演说的语场是2009年亚利桑那大学的毕业典礼现场,语旨是总统奥巴马和亚利桑那大学的领导、老师和2009届全体毕业生,语式是公众演讲。

4 语篇分析

接下来,文章将从分别及物性系统、情态系统和主位系统三个角度来论证语言的概念功能、人际功能和语篇功能是怎样在这篇演讲中得到体现的。

4.1 及物性系统分析

及物性是概念功能的一部分,它是基本的语义概念。概念功能在语言系统中通过及物性来体现,它把人们在现实世界中的活动表达成若干过程,通过指明各种过程的“参与者”(participant)和“环境成分”(circumstantial element)来反映语言的概念功能。根据Halliday(1994)的观点,语言中共有六类过程类型:物质过程、心理过程、关系过程、言语过程、行为过程和存在过程。其中物质过程、心理过程和关系过程是最常见的三种表示概念功能的过程。

物质过程反映外部世界,表示做某事的过程。它至少有一个参与者:“动作者”(actor)。过程动词可能是及物的,也可能是不及物的。如果有两个参与者,另一个就是过程指向的对象——“目标”(goal),过程动词一般是一个表动作的词。如表1。

心理过程是表示“感觉”(sensing)的心理活动的过程。心理过程一般有两个参与者:心理活动的主体“感觉者”(sensor和客体即被感知的“现象”(phenomenon)。过程动词一般是表示感觉、反应、认知等心理活动的动词。如表2。

系过程是指反映事物之间处于任何关系的过程。关系过程一般有两个参与者:“认同者”(identifier)和“被认同者”(identified)。关系过程可细分为“归属性关系过程”(attributive)和“限定性关系过程”(descriptive)两种,前者对事物进行描写,后者对事物进行限定。过程动词一般由系动词充当。如表3。

通过ROST词频分析软件对过程动词的统计,该篇演讲中各类过程的使用情况如表4所示。

从所选语料可以看出,物质、关系和心理这3种过程是这篇演讲中最主要的3种过程。其中物质过程的小句在演讲中出现的次数最多,它们在演讲中大多用于描述人的行为活动。比如奥巴马为了阐明什么才是真正的成功标准时,列举了大量历史人物正反两面的经历,大量的物质过程小句在此增强了观点的说服力。与此同时,奥巴马运用了许多关系过程的小句,向听众概括了美国所处的严峻复杂的国内国际环境,这些描绘听起来客观真实,极易引起听众的共鸣。心理过程的小句则多被用来表达奥巴马对于上述客观存在的问题的态度立场以及对毕业生们的殷切期望。各种过程的综合使用再现了人的各种社会经历和心理经历,演讲者思维过程的逻辑性得到了很好的体现。

4.2 情态系统分析

Halliday(1994)认为,情态是体现人际意义的重要手段之一。讲话者通过情态对自己所讲的命题的成功性和有效性进行判断,或在命题中要求对方承担的义务,或在提议中表达个人意愿。在语篇中,情态的实现方式是多样的,主要包括情态动词、情态附加语、情态隐喻等。该文主要探讨情态动词的使用情况。情态涵盖的是“是”和“否”之间的意义领域,即情态具有归向性(polarity),在“是”与“否”的两极之间,说话人可以把他的命题表达为具有不同程度的可能性和合意性(desirability)。在系统功能语言学里,情态动词被看作主观隐性的情态手段,具有高、中、低三个量值(Halliday,1994)。

从该统计来看,这篇演讲一共使用情态动词43次,其中低量值的情态动词使用得最多,百分比高达69.7%,其次是中量值的情态动词25.5%,而高情态量值的情态动词使用很少,只占4.7%。这是因为中低量值的情态动词一方面可以表明奥巴马的观点和态度,另一方面体现了一种人际策略——缩短了他和毕业生之间的距离,使立场更容易得到接受和认可,有利于与毕业生形成良好的情感互动,唤起学生及家长的共鸣。比如“can”一词的大量使用表明了奥巴马对毕业生能力的肯定,如“they changed the course of history--and so can you ASU”;而“will”一词则表明奥巴马对未来一定会有所改变的信心,如“you will be the better for that continued effort”。反过来说,正是奥巴马的总统身份,使得演讲中无论是对毕业生能力的赞扬还是对未来信心的表达都异常振奋人心,都能够极大的鼓舞在场学生的激情和斗志。话语的人际功能因此得到了充分的体现。高量值的情态动词一般用于表达演讲者坚定的信念。这一点在这篇演讲中体现的并不充分,因为演讲中唯一一处用到高量值情态动词的地方是“I have to tell you,I really thought this was much ado about nothing”,这句话是他演讲正式开始前用来就亚利桑那大学打算授予他荣誉学位一事表明自己的态度——“不得不说,这真的有点小题大做”——而事实上这句话与该演讲的主旨并无联系。

4.3 主位结构分析

主位结构是语篇功能的重要概念。Halliday(1994)指出,任何句子或话语从交际功能的角度可划分为两个语义组成部分,即主位(theme)述位(rheme),主位是句子信息所关注的对象,是信息的出发点,是要论证的内容;述位是对主位的陈述,往往是未知信息或新信息。主位结构在语篇功能中占有着非常重要的地位,是利用语篇功能分析和研究语篇的出发点。

在语篇展开的过程中,前后句子的主位和述位,述位和述位、主位和主位之间会产生某种联系和变化,这种联系和变化被称为主位推进(thematic progression)(Thompson,1996)。英语中主位推进模式主要有以下四种类型:主位同一型(平行型或放射型:主位相同,述位不同),述位同一型(集中型:主位不同,述位相同),延续型(梯形:前一句的述位或述位的一部分成为后一句的主位)和交叉型(前一句的主位是后一句的述位)(朱永生、严世清2001:103-104)。各句主位的向前推进,使得语篇相互联系,逐步展开,形成一个完整的意义整体。如:

You(T1)'re taught to chase after all the usual brass rings;you(T2)try to be on this"who's who"list or that top 100 list;you(T3)chase after the big money and you figure out how big your corner office is;you(T4)worry about whether you have a fancy enough title or a fancy enough car.

这句话中的四个主位都是句子的主语“you”。奥巴马通过对无标记的单项主位“you”的重复,描述了美国社会故有的衡量个人成功的标准就是对名誉和物质占有的多寡,他明确表述了这种陈腐的成功标准只会使人们沉迷于对物质利益的不断追逐,进而忘记了自己真正的梦想。就此我们可以看出这类主语既是主位的同一型主位推进模式有利于充分表达主语的立场、态度,同时也易于形成排比句式,增强话语的气势。

事实上,运用单独一种主位推进模式向前推进的语篇虽然有,但为数不多。因为如果语篇本身较长,使用同一种主位模式会使人读上去感到十分单调,因此大多数篇幅的推进都比较复杂,往往是几种模式的综合使用(朱永生,严世清2001:105)。比如演讲中的这一段话:

5 结论

综上所述,该文结合语境和语言形式,通过对及物性系统的分析,发现演讲中大量存在的物质过程和存在过程增加了演讲的客观性和说服力;通过对情态系统中情态动词的使用分析,发现演讲者大量使用了中低量值的情态动词,一方面拉近与听众的距离,另一方面使说话者的态度表达更具客观性;接着文章分析了演讲的主位结构和主位推进模式,发现演讲者在谋篇的过程中,综合使用多种主位推进模式,从大家所熟知的信息出发,以平行、集中、延续和交叉等多种推进方式引出所要论证的新信息,充分地论证了自己的立场,整篇演讲一气呵成。通过上述分析,该文认为Halliday的系统功能语法框架是十分有力的语篇分析工具,它既可以用来揭示语篇的深层含义又可以用来理解和解释语篇语义和文体特点。

该文也注意到企图对同一语篇或同类语篇从各个角度做穷尽的功能分析是不现实的,分析角度的选择应该取决于分析者的兴趣能力和不同语篇的文体特点或语言特点。

Shortly after I said: I’m not gonna do that again. How can I use this show to not just be a show, but allow it to be a service to the viewer? That question of “How do we serve the viewer?” transformed the show. And because we asked that question every single day from 1989 forward—with the intention of only doing what was in service to the people who were watching—that is why now, no matter where I go in the world, people say “I watched your show, it changed my life.” People watched and were raised by that show. I did a good job of raising a lot of people, I must say. That happened because of an intention to be of service.
