在医科大学, 少数民族学生基本分三类。第一类, 是七年制本硕连读的学生。这些学生在高考中成绩遥遥领先于其他普通本科生, 本可以去北京上海大城市读一本的成绩, 被录进相对遥远的边疆城市, 凭着高中三年扎实的学习基础和顽强的毅力, 大多数能使尽全身解数, 突破种种难关, 拿下英语这个拦路虎。他们中间的少数民族学生, 绝大多数是民考汉, 因为学习英语的时间和经历基本与汉族学生一致, 取得好的成绩, 应该是情理中事。第二类, 是民考汉的普通本科生。他们在汉语环境中和汉族同学一起学习英语, 也有同样的顺境逆境, 有喜有悲, 起起伏伏之中, 英语是所有科目之一, 集中优势兵力, 大部分人也能拿到校内考试的及格分数, 顺利离校。
本文着重要讨论的是第三类少数民族学生, 是学习英语过程中困难最多的一个人群, 即民考民的同学。他们在中学基本没有学过英语, 在进大学之后, 先经过一个学年汉语预科的听说读写的集中训练, 在汉语通过HSK的国家考试后, 于第二年进入本人所报医学专业的院系开始专业的学习。在汉语刚刚过关, 勉强可以听懂用汉语讲授的医学专业的讲课的第一年, 开始学习全新的一门外语, 绝大多数语法内容同样是用汉语讲解, 其中的困难绝非局外人可以了解。
首先是民族学生开始英语学习的时候, 要面对一个相对汉族学生来说要苛刻的多的一个学习进度大纲。汉族学生和民考汉的学生从初中一年级正式开英语课到高三毕业, 六年时间, 每年两个学期, 每周至少四节英语课, 总课时量有七百多学时。六年的英语课要掌握的英语词汇量在高考大纲中是两千五百左右。而少数民族中的民考民学生, 却被要求在两个学年四个学期的不到两百个学时的时间中掌握三千词汇量, 不排除其中会有千里挑一甚至万里挑一的佼佼者, 不屈不挠靠着顽强的拼搏考过国家四六级考上研究生。我们不能忽视医科大学学生们本来就已有非常繁重的专业课的学习任务。当然, 相关高校的教改部门在制订大纲时也在不断的摸索和调整中, 但是, 全国的本科生毕业生的统一标准放在那里, 以及医学专业的学生从业后的客观要求, 都是民考民的学生无法回避的现实。时间紧, 任务重, 有部分同学最终交出让学生和老师都无法满意的答卷, 似乎是意料中的结局。
笔者每次在新学期伊始, 都会先给民族班的学生们发一份简单的调查问卷, 请大家简介自己的家乡, 学习简历, 对于英语有多少了解, 要他们事先确立正确的态度, 准备好学习英语的各种必要条件:诸如划出一个固定的课余时间专门分配给英语, 养成每天挤出时间听说读写英语课文。大多数问卷是需要学生用汉语回答的, 待收回问卷浏览学生的答卷的时候, 我总是立刻感觉到了自己肩上的担子的沉重。因为从他们稚嫩而又歪歪斜斜的汉字的表达中, 我可以感受到他们在用汉语学习医学专业课时的艰难, 想到他们又要开始另一段艰苦的旅程, 有一分同情甚至敬佩会油然而生。
因为教材进展的进度迅速, 学生很容易消化不良。一堂课有大量的内容需要吸收牢记, 语音, 词汇, 句法, 什么都是全新的, 一堂课如果不及时消化, 立刻成为以后学习的障碍。我们这些教民族生的英语老师总是感觉顾此失彼, 手忙脚乱, 做不到语言学习过程中应有的精讲多练, 能多讲少练, 把难点讲完就不错了, 顾不上学生们是否完全理解, 就到了下课时间。其余的消化理解就只能指望学生课后去完成了, 偏偏医科院校的学生又很难挤出大块的课余时间来学习英语, 能起早贪黑挤时间的, 只能是少数人。很大部分学生在第一学期很吃力地勉强跟上, 第二学期就跟不动了。也有学生第一学期就考不及格, 后面就每况愈下, 直到最后无法收拾残局。
教民考民学生的英语老师要努力帮助学生取得学习英语的成功。英语老师要动员他们挤出一切可以抢出来的时间用来攻破英语这个难关, 努力让它变成以后让自己飞向更远世界的翅膀。书本理论知识毕竟太显苍白, 学生们最需要的是活生生的榜样。本人教过的一个民考民的学生, 经过艰苦非凡的努力, 从医科大学的三本学院的临床学专业毕业, 考上了研究生。不仅通过了国家四六级的英语考试, 在研究生毕业一年后, 参加雅思考试, 得到7.5的好成绩, 考到了日本东京大学去继续深造。在她在本大学读研期间, 每学期新生入校, 我都会把她请到民考民学生的教室里, 现身说法, 请她亲口告诉自己的学弟学妹, 自己是如何攻克了英语学习的难关。如果整个教研组能考虑到初学英语的少数民族学生的实际情况, 开展一些有趣有益的班级之间的朗读比赛, 课文背诵比赛, 英语歌曲演唱会等等课外活动, 一定也会受到能歌善舞的少数民族同学的欢迎。
