After the final episodes of Desperate Housewives were aired on May 14, Chinese netizens posted over 1 million messages paying tribute to the show on micro-blogging sites.
American shows like House M.D. and Desperate Housewives are not aired on Chinese television, but are instead watched by a growing number of young people on the Internet.

“I still remember the Desperate Housewives scene that our teacher showed to us during an English class at college. Eight years are a long time, and along with the show, we gradually grew mature,” said Xia Xiaonuan, a devoted fan of Desperate Housewives, on her micro-blog.
“The show has accompanied me like a friend since I was a girl,” said Xu Duoduo, a 25-year-old mother living in Beijing who was also a loyal viewer of the TV series. As the show’s four housewives underwent various plot twists and turns, such as murder, illness, divorce and remarriage, Xu grew from a girl to a mother. Many like her have matured and changed to the backdrop of popular television dramas.
For the Chinese audience, American TV shows have played an increasingly important role in their entertainment lives.
“In addition to the clever plot twists, American TV series impress me with rich knowledge and expertise,” said Wang Fan, a 28-year-old audience from Chongqing Municipality.
After watching Lie to Me, a popular crime series where detectives solve criminal cases by scrutinizing suspects’ facial “micro- expressions,” Wang began observing people’s facial cues more closely.
“It is amazing that American screenwriters and directors could make an entertaining program so professional,” said Wang.
Chinese audiences first started watching American TV series in large numbers in the 1980s. In 1980, China Central Television(CCTV) broadcast The Man From Atlantis. The short-lived science fiction show, though flat by today’s standards, immediately swept China. After years of isolation from the outside world, the people were eager to learn more about the West. The broadcast became a landmark event in China’s long process of reform and opening up.
At that time, many households didn’t own televisions, and few domestic TV series were on the air. In 1979, the Central Government encouraged all local TV stations to produce TV series to spur demand. Any television station that could air 12 episodes a year was even given an award.
For the Chinese audience of the early 1980s, The Man From Atlantis was fresh and exciting. Many lines became common slang phrases among young viewers. Even the sunglasses worn by the hero, Mark Harris, became a stylish must-have accessory popularly referred to then as “Mark glasses.” His swimming style was widely adopted. The TV series also inadvertently introduced a new sport to China—playing Frisbee.
The people’s humor
Roger Christiansen, director of the international hit comedy show Friends, came to Beijing and Shanghai again in May of this year. And again, Chinese fans warmly welcomed him.
Friends attracted a devoted following in China during its 10-season run, and has not been forgotten since the series drew to a close in 2004.
Christiansen, who became the director of the situation comedy in 2000, said he was surprised by the show’s success in China because it was made for an American audience. He found that people of all countries and regions liked it for different reasons.
He admitted that he didn’t expect the humor to cross over and amuse the Chinese audience, as comedy is often culturally specific and difficult to translate. Although the show presented a different culture, certain elements of it were common to all human beings, said Christiansen.
Friends delivered a rare brand of comedy that had wide appeal. When the audience watched Friends, they laughed and cried along with the characters as if they were personal friends, said Christiansen to a group of Chinese journalists.
In his view, Chinese TV series were developing and making progress with shows in the United States. The screenwriting, lighting and sound effects improved as producers learned from one another.
The popularity of American sitcoms like Friends also contributed to the development of China’s own TV series.
The Chinese people first saw situation comedy in 1982, when the American TV series My Favorite Martian was broadcast by a number of local TV stations in China. Until the show was aired, most Chinese were unfamiliar with the format.
In the next 10 years another American sitcom, Growing Pains, entertained the Chinese audience with its amusing family-centered stories. The sitcom has since become a favorite form of television in the mainland.
The country saw its first domestic situation comedy in 1994, with the airing of Wo Ai Wo Jia (I Love My Family). The series became extremely popular and is loved by the audience even today. Similar to Growing Pains, the comedy focused on family life. By telling stories of three generations of a family and their neighbors, it presented a vivid picture of ordinary people’s lives. It presented Chinese humor with an American format.
Ready for primetime
The success of American TV series has led to comparisons with domestic shows.
“After watching House M.D., I couldn’t bear to watch domestic medical dramas any more. I find them simple and dull,” said Wang Qiang, a 28-year-old fan.
American shows attach great importance to interacting with the audience. No matter the stage of plot development, series are cancelled when ratings fall, said Wu Mengjie, a media professional.
In the eyes of Gao Qunshu, a Chinese director well known for making TV series about the lives of cops, the Americans have a prominent advantage—respect for commercial and artistic rules.
After a century of development, the Americans had established an effective mechanism for storytelling and movie production, said Gao.
Gao advised young directors not to rush into innovation, but to learn from the existing masterpieces of their American counterparts in the first place. Only in this way can they build a sound foundation for future creativity.
However, there is also encouraging news for domestic TV series, which have seen an increase in ratings despite widespread criticism. The number and size of the series are already enough to make China the world’s top producer of television shows.
According to official statistics, only half of these shows can be broadcast on television. Fortunately, the Internet has provided an alternative broadcasting platform for viewership.
The market-oriented operation which started in the 1990s has also served as a driving force for the development of Chinese TV series. The government investment and corporate sponsorship are no longer the only sources of funds for TV show production. More private capital has flown into the industry in the form of commercial investments or loans.

根据以上理念我设计并实施了教学,体现在以下几个方面:
一、活动,为学生创设愉悦的学习环境。
这节课我所教授的我采用的是逐一介绍的方法来进行的:第一个是采用听录音填关键词,第二个是跟读并齐读,第三个是用听后回答问题,第四个是给学生自己时间读后请学生来读,这前四个中以第一个为重点,里面涉及到连个新单词,我以图片解释的方式来呈现,一个是volleyball,我用福娃打排球的图片来学生学习了这个新单词,另一个是group,通过介绍学生感兴趣的SHE让学生理解group(组合)其余四个我是已自学的形式让学生完成调查表格的,在设计这个环节时我虽然考虑到教学形式的多样性,但形式较单一,主要以读为主,忽略了学生的多样化需求。多媒体出示:“小丸子”的照片。引导学生说: Her name is„she has„„所通过对朋友的描述培养学生口头表达能力。以趣味操练(Practice.)

二、注重情感教育,促进学生健康发展
“情感是沟通的纽带”,我以“情”为纽带,让生活成为学生感悟语言的基础。开课伊始,我让学生为我们的朋友Toby过生日,唱birthday chant,在优美音乐节奏的配合下,学生对友情有了跟深刻的认识。学生享受跟朋友共度生日好时光的同时,不断地掀起情感的波澜,充分友情的魅力,在学生欣赏这首英文歌的同时,都不由自主的跟着music唱出他们对友情的理解。只是由于时间的限制,在最后阶段,对引出这首歌的过渡上,显得稍有欠缺,如我适当引导:We have so many friends: Toby,Pit,Pat,our classmates, our teachers, our parents„ Are you happy? 学生回答是的(Yes.)我想那样的情感导入会更好,有水到渠成的效果。新课标》指出:英语教学要采用活动途径,让学生通过感知、体验、实践、参与和合作等方式,形成积极的学习态度,促进语言综合运用能力的提高。因此在设计本课时,我采用了一种全新的教学方式,不是从外部强制地去灌输知识,让学生被动的学习知识,而是通过与学生的交流合作及不同的活动设计,从内部去激发学生的求知欲,使学生能主动投入学习,主动构建知识。本课在教学方式上,以学生参加“快乐英语大本营”的形式展开。共设有开场,回忆吧,英语超市,表演秀,尾声五个环节。把教学过程中的准备,复习,新课,练习,作业充分融入到每个环节中,为学生营造宽松,民主,和谐的学习氛围。教师以节目主持人的身份参加,学生以参赛者的身份参加。把整个语言的学习过程变为学生展示自己能力水平的过程。充分体现了课标的基本理念:突出学生主体。在五个环节中又设计了不同的活动有:看图作动作说,蒙住眼睛猜人物。描述明星,介绍朋友,设计卡通等等活动。从而实现由语言形式的操练转向语言内容的操练,使学生在愉快的氛围中,保持了学习的兴趣。同时,在各种活动中,我借助自己夸张的表情和肢体语言,一次又一次地调动了学生学习的积极性,实现了师生互动和生生互动,让英语课真正“活”了起来!
没有大量信息的输入,何来输出?英语,作为学生的第二语言,必然受到母语的干扰,只有利用有限的课堂40分钟,给学生足够的信息,进行有效(效率+效果)的练习。根据教材的延续性、反复性特点,本节课中,单词的听、说、认读是一个重点,句型的练习和运用则既是重点,也是难点.为了让学生能较好地把握新词句,我创设了贴近学生生活的语言使用环境,构成了不同的信息差,并采用分层教学的方法,突出了重点(单词学习:模仿——跟读——纠正——巩固——运用),突破了难点(句型与对话:个人拍手机械操练——二人合作意义操练,教师引导说——半扶半放说——自由说),让学生的学习有据可依、有梯可爬。
本节课虽在精心的设计下,产生了师生互动,基本完成了教学内容,但还是存在着一些问题:
1、学生个体差异考虑不周——备课,要备学生。
备课时,我仅根据平时自己的所想,采用高密度、多信息的教学方法,以为用不同形式的活动可以引导学生到达“目的地”——运用新词句自由说。由于对学生个体差异欠考虑,过高估计了学生的原有认知和综合运用语言的能力,导致了学生有些“消化不良”,没能完全接受教学内容。这个教训进一步提醒了我:首先,在今后备课时,不但要认真备教材,还要充分备学生,为可能出现的变化作好准备;其次,在教学中出现此类情况时,我应当立即降低教学难度,让学生可以在同一目标的不同层次有所发展,不会“因噎废食”。
2、设计多样活动,但是个别衔接不够自然。
在教学活动中,各活动和环节要做到衔接自然,才能使教学行云流水,一气呵成。在本堂教学中,我有两处考虑不周的地方:一是在热身阶段后马上就进入了教学,中间太显突兀。可以通过猜朋友自然过渡到此句型的教学,从而保持课堂的完整一体性。二是在英语超市的环节中,没有考虑过渡语言就直接跳到了学生表演的环节,学生一下子没有反应过来。这都需要在平时的教学中避免出现的错误。
学生在课堂中兴趣很浓,但最后发现自己没有真正驾驭好课堂秩序。还有更重要的一点,自己在即兴问答学生时,出现了语法错误的句子。语音也需好好的进行学习和改进了。小学英语教师的基本功是学科里面,应该要求是最多的。除了唱、跳、画、演等,还要有标准的语音和漂亮的书写。更要有创新的思维,能让这个新兴科目发展的更快。

Queen Victoria, the magnificent pleasure-boat, berthed quietly at Chaotianmen wharf. From its boarding file came two Belgians: Mr. George Bauvin, president of the International Forum of Decision Makers on Youth & School Exchange (IFDMYE) and his wife, both in high spirits. They paid a visit to China at the invitation of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC). After finishing talks about cooperation and exchanges with Capital University of Medical Sciences, they came to Chongqing and started their three-night-and-four-day journey on the Yangtze.
Mr. Bauvin said, to people of Belgium and other western countries, the Three Gorges on the Yangtze is China’s most famous tourist site besides the Great Wall in Beijing and the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an. Innumerable people yearn to visit the Three Gorges.
At nine o’clock in the evening, after a hoot, the boat weighed anchor. Passengers were invited to a bar on the fourth floor to attend a meeting. A detailed introduction about the service facility, the staffers, the traveling schedule and safety, was given by a representative of the foreign owner of the boat in fluent English, German and French. Enjoying the self-concocted beverage of the boat, passengers both from China and abroad chatted happily, like a reunion of old friends.
The next day, at half past seven, Doctor Liu began to teach the passengers taiji. Joining others, Mr. Bauvin learned it attentively. His movements were almost exact which showed his quick comprehension of oriental culture.
At 10:15, the Queen Victoria arrived at Wanzhou. Everyone went sightseeing ashore. A part of Wanzhou City is below the red line, which means one third of the city will be inundated after 2009. The part within everyone’s view had nearly finished its dismantling and resettlement project, leaving only some trucks still working there. In contrast, in the part above the red line there was a bustling scene. Green terraced fields on the mountain slop behind could be seen from between high buildings. On both sides of the street we saw fruit hawkers and porters busy with their business. The typical local shoeblacks attracted many foreign visitors. Visits to the grotesque stone exhibition and the hanging coffin exhibition satisfied our curiosity.
When all passengers were back, Queen Victoria continued its voyage downstream.
At 14:00, a guide gave a briefing on the Yangtze River and the Three Gorges Dam to the passengers in the bar.
At 16:00, Doctor Liu explained and then demonstrated traditional Chinese treatment of an ailment in English.
At 18:15, everyone was invited to a welcoming cocktail party hosted by the captain of the boat.
At 20:00, after supper, passengers gathered together to watch a fashion show on the boat. With China’s gorgeous dresses of both ancient and modern style, and the charming body language of the performers, who were young staffers of the boat, the day ended in an atmosphere of relaxation and enjoyment.
At dawn of the third day, Baidicheng appeared on the left side of the boat, indicating that the Three Gorges was nearby. In a few minutes the Qutang Gorge jumped into our view. It is 8 kilometres’ long and took the boat 20 minutes to pass through. Mr. Bauvin was busy filming the scenes with his video camera and frequently exchanged a few words with friends around him.
At half past eight, the boat arrived at Wushan Mountain. All the passengers went on board a small boat to visit the Lesser Three Gorges of the Daning River. Clear water, picturesque mountains with monkeys jumping and playing among the trees, the river was just what the great poet Li Bai had described in his poem. Through the mist were seen fields with crops and groups of houses, which apparently were newly built by the government for the resettlers who were evacuated from the inundated parts of the Yangtze River. By the bank of the river, buffaloes and ducks were enjoying themselves in the shallow water.
On the bank, farmers waved their hands to greet us. Entering the Lesser Three Gorges, our guide, moved by the familiar sights, sang a folk song. Her melodious voice reverberated among the gorges. Everyone beat time for her with their hands.
At noon, passengers returned to Queen Victoria. At 13:00, the boat entered the Wuxia Gorge. Boards with the number of 143m or 175m to indicate the depth of the water were frequently seen on both banks of the river. Our guide told us that the water level of this part of the Yangtze had risen dozens of metres after the completion of the first phase of the Three Gorges Dam project. In the Wuxia Gorge, the water level had risen to 143 metres. 175 metres is the height that it will reach after the completion of the whole project in 2009. Suddenly, the broadcast directed everyone’s eyes to the left side of the boat. It was the Goddess Peak appearing on the top of the mountains. Although the water level had risen dozens of metres, it had no effect at all on the beauty of the Goddess Peak, which stood among other mountain peaks all several hundred metres high.
At half past sixteen, we entered the Xiling Gorge, which once was notorious for its dangerous rapids and hidden shoals. In the past, it was very difficult for boats to get through. Now, all the dangers have gone. When boats meet there, they just greet each other by sounding their sirens, there is no need any more for them to slow down and make way for each other.
At half past eighteen, Queen Victoria arrived at the Three Gorges Dam and spent more than three hours for passing through the five-level ship locks. Mr.Bauvin stayed on the deck all the time. It seemed that he wanted to have an unforgettable impression of this world-famous water conservancy project. He returned to his cabin pretty late.
In the morning of the 4th day, passengers left the boat to see the Three Gorges Dam on the Zhongbao Island. After taking some photos with the monument of the project, we visited the exhibition hall and learned the general situation of the dam in terms of flood control, power generation, preservation of the cultural relics, ecosystem sustainability, resettlement of local residents, etc.
After passengers came back to the boat, we resumed our voyage and entered the eastern section of the Xiling Gorge.
The last dinner on the boat was served at noon. In a mood of joy, Mr. Bauvin asked for a bottle of wine and said happily: “Today is my 55th birthday. It is unforgettable to me to spend this day at the Three Gorges. Not only do I feel Chinese people’s kindness again, but I also enjoy the scenery and legends along the Yangtze. I have been overwhelmed by the imposing Three Gorges Dam. My experience in the past four days is beyond what I have expected. When I return home, I will hold a reception to show to my friends the real Three Gorges of China.”

二、单元教材分析
1.本单元重点学习描述外貌特征和爱好的词汇与句型。其中难点在于B部分的Let’s talk,它综合运用了本单元的三类句型,以串成对话的形式出现。教师在教学描述人的体貌特征的形容词可适当介绍语言背景。
(1)形容词可适当介绍语言背景。一般不用fat来形容人,这不礼貌,而是使用strong这个词。
(2)教学 play computer games时适时说明要玩有益的电脑游戏。2.教师教学“what’s his/her name?”可通过旧句型““what’s your name?”引出。教学“my friends like …”时要注意教材在学生用书三年级下册第六单元的句型“it likes…”中已做铺垫;或者可以从句型“what do you like? I like …” 中引出。注意区分like和likes的用法。教学she, he可从句型“who is this/that boy/girl/man/woman?”中引出,以旧带新,降低知识点的难度。
3.另外,本单元A、B 部分的read and write 字母例词中的部分单词在教学中要予以特别关注,如van, yacht, zipper 等均为第一次出现。本单元要求掌握的四会单词较长,拼写有一定的困难,教师在教学中要注意予以指导。
