在当前全球化与信息化的时代, 跨文化交流不断增加, 英语的口头表达能力和交际能力已成为现代社会对人才的基本要求。 公司企业在招聘时已不再局限于对文凭、证书的审查, 各种方式的交谈、 面试已成为必不可少的甚至最重要的考察环节。 与此同时, 高校的大学英语课堂对学生口头表达能力的培养成效并不尽如人意, 大多数课堂口语活动局限于语言形式的操练, 而非语用能力的培养, 这样的教学并不能达到使学生学会灵活运用语言的目的。

美国学者卢卡斯认为, 演讲是一门说话的艺术, 是交流的重要手段。 因为演讲与言语交际学的关系是十分密切的, 演讲能力被看成是交际的必要能力[1]。 从教学的角度来说, 演讲是培养学生分析、综合、推理思维能力的有效手段[2]。 因此, 探索和实施一种以学生为中心的、有效的课堂演讲形式, 在目前的大学英语教学中具有积极的意义。

2.大学英语课堂主题演讲模式的改进

2.1传统演讲模式存在的问题

演讲是提高学生思维能力和语言表达能力的一种重要手段。然而, 在大学英语课堂实行演讲活动时经常会遇到以下问题:第一, 学生演讲者将演讲当成任务完成, 并未充分准备;第二, 学生听众因背景知识匮乏而不能很好地理解演讲内容;第三, 演讲者与听众之间没有交流互动, 没有针对演讲的反馈。 面对这些不尽如人意的教学情况, 有研究者发表评议:“课堂练习所取得的成果令人失望, 无法让学生达到在真实情景中进行流利而有效交流的目的。 ”[3]那么, 我们有没有可能对演讲模式进行改进呢?

2.2改进主题演讲模式的具体策略

布朗指出, 在练习口语时, 说话人需要个别发言, 而且在理想情况下, 需要有人聆听并做出反馈[4]。 潘宁顿认为, 运用多人组活动能够提高学习者的动机, 提升他们做选择的能力, 培养他们的独立性、创造性及现实感, 还可以向学习者提供反馈信息, 但信息来源不是教师而是学生同伴[5]。 吉布森也强调过反馈的重要性, 表示说话人能从别人的反馈中学到很多东西, 既有演讲的正面因素, 又有负面的[6]。

除了国外学者的研究, 近年来国内不少资深外语教师也对英语课堂的演讲做了不少研究工作, 如颜静兰与贾卉[7]、任文[8]等从理论上探讨了演讲活动在培养学生综合语言运用能力上所起到的作用;张东玉[9]、唐艳玲与毕会英[10]等实证检验了在英语课堂实施主题演讲所取得的成效, 为演讲模式的改进提供了丰富的实践经验。

在上述研究成果的基础上, 笔者提出了几条可用于改进主题演讲模式的策略。

(1) 将演讲主题与课堂教学主题结合: 当前使用的 《 新编大学英语》教材中的单元主题具有时代性, 贴合现实生活, 很适合作为演讲主题。 教师可根据教学进度, 为学生指定一个范围, 演讲内容则由学生自定。 演讲者可从教材上寻找相关材料, 听者通过倾听演讲, 也对该主题有了更多认识, 因此此学学生对单元内容更熟悉, 课堂学习效率也能得到提高。

(2) 增加师生问答互动环节:教师提问, 并将学生回回摇摇答答摇摇摇表现计入平时成绩, 敦促学生在演讲前对该主题进行更多的思考, 并对可能的提问进行预测以早做准备, 现场问答更需演讲者发挥辨析、推理、判断等批判性思维能力, 也提升了学生的心理素质。

(3) 增加学生之间的问答互动环节: 教师选定2名口头表达能力较强的“常任提问者”, 定期轮换, 他们的存在能够有效避免无学生发问的冷场现象, 其他学生则自由提问, 活跃的提问者可获得课堂表现的加分。 这一措施可敦促担任听众的学生认真听讲, 并对演讲内容进行归纳、分析和总结, 以及提出质疑, 从而使学生的批判性思维能力得到锻炼和提高。

3.实证研究设计

上面从理论角度研究了改进大学英语课堂演讲模式的方法, 但是是否真的有效? 为了检验这一构想的有效性, 笔者选取浙江树人大学2014级新生的两个班级作为实验对象, 前提是在第一学期的期末考试中, 这两个班级的平均分接近或基本相等。 实验步骤如下:

(1) 从第二学期开始, 对照组教学照常, 实验组实施互动式主题演讲活动。 演讲主题由教师根据当前课堂教学主题定下范围, 具体演讲内容由学生自定。 演讲时间为每次上课的前5分钟, 按照学号顺序, 每次由3名学生分工合作, 限3分钟内完成演讲。 演讲结束后, 先由教师提问, 再由2名“常任提问者”提问, 若其他学生还有问题也可提出, 每名演讲者必须至少回答一个问题。 教师根据该生的演讲和回答表现打分, 分数将被记入平时成绩的“课堂表现”栏, 参与提问的学生视表现酌情加分。

(2) 在学期结束前对实验组进行问卷调查, 收集学生反馈, 统计并分析问卷调查结果。

(3) 统计并对比第二学期实验组和对照组的期末考试成绩。

4.结果与讨论

4.1学生对 “互动式”主题演讲活动的反馈

从统计数据看, 同意主题演讲活动可增强口语表达能力和加强英语会话自信心的学生达到100%, 认为该活动可提高听力理解能力和培养批判性思维能力的也高达99%。此外, 99%的学生肯定了演讲主题与教学单元主题结合在加深教学内容理解上起到的积极作用。总的说来, 互动式主题演讲活动获得了学生的认可。

4.2学生期末考试成绩的变化

下表统计了实行互动式主题演讲活动前后的实验班和对照班的期末考试卷面平均分:

从卷面平均分的变化看, 两个班级的成绩都较实验前有所提高, 但是实验组的成绩提高更多, 显示演讲活动对于提高学生听课效率, 加强对教学单元主题的理解起到了一定的作用。

结语

以上教学实验基于理论研究进行设计和展开, 目标是观察改进的大学英语课堂演讲活动能否提高学生的听说能力, 培养学生的批判性思维能力, 以及加强学习英语的自信。 实验结果表明, 学生认为自身的各方面能力在演讲活动中获得提高, 对该活动持肯定态度, 而且期末考试成绩较实验前有所进步。 通过这一研究和实践, 提示教师为学生创造更真实的语言环境, 以“指导者”而非“控制者”的身份, 引导学生树立一种用英语交流的意识, 相信会取得比过去更好的教学效果。 当然, 本文的实验只是个案, 必然存在某些缺陷, 还需假以时日用更多的实践研究证实互动式主题演讲在真实课堂教学中的有效性。

摘要:本文基于演讲这一大学英语课堂上常见的口语活动, 探索以学生为中心、以主题为基础的互动式演讲模式的有效性, 旨在提高学生的口语表达能力和听力理解能力, 培养学生的批判性思维能力, 增强学生参与英语会话的自信心, 提高教师为学生创造真实的语言环境, 引导学生树立起用英语交流的意识。

母亲、外婆、外公总是喜欢坐在阳光喜微处,细细地品味着他们无法忘怀的年华。我、我弟、我妹一时好奇安静地听他们畅谈,一时闹得天翻地覆,这个画面里总少不了无拘无束的阵阵笑声。这个画面里最抢眼的要算外公了,一双写满沧桑的手,上面爬满了一个个无情的茧,但他健壮的体魄与炯炯有神的大眼睛凸显出他的活力。只见他说得“雨水”四溅,手舞足蹈,时而深情地望着身旁的妻子与儿女,时而用并不悦耳的嗓音叮嘱我们注意安全。这是一段令人刻骨铭心的温馨回忆。

年复一年,日复一日,又到了春节。这时不管工作怎么忙大家都会回家团聚,这应该是老人家们最开心的时光了吧!“外公、外公,给我一个打火机咯,我想玩鞭炮”。我那稚嫩的童声脆脆响起,只见外公脸上露出严肃的表情,“小孩子不可以玩火的,要是不小心伤到了怎么办!”我不敢抬头看他严肃的脸,但贪玩之心谁也阻挡不了,我赌气地跑到各个房间去找打火机。一阵翻箱倒柜,在把房间里的东西弄得一片狼藉之后,打火机终于现身了。我迅速找到我的“实验室”,“实验材料”一切准备就绪,只待引燃,内心充满挑战前的快意。最终我的手、头发、眉毛、眼皮也都成了试验品。那时的我并没有意识到危险性,只是感到一阵痛楚随后席卷而来,随后哭声尖利刺耳,几米外的外公手里还拿着扫帚,就如一个百米冲刺的运动员,满脸通红地冲到我面前,我并没有感到害怕,看到外公这么紧张反而倍感幸福。他为我微微哈气拂去我的伤痛,细细抚慰,句句暖心,它让我懂得,心有多宽爱就有多深。

在Webquest教学模式中, 学生是主体, 是学习的主动建构者。学生通过网络, 在教师的引导下, 按照一定的任务, 促使学生进行自主探究学习, 有利于学生自己动手搜寻资源, 自己动脑找出问题并解决问题, 从而促使学生进行自主学习, 发展思维技巧, 引导学生如何利用网络中丰富的资源, 还在解决问题的过程中促进学生更高水平的思考, 发展思维。同时, 学生利用网络资源, 针对要解决的任务, 学生们可以充分发挥自己的想像力, 提出各种解决方案, 不会受到课堂或者是课本的约束。

1.学生自主性问题

2.明确使用目的

教师在实施网络教学活动的过程中, 应明确使用的目的, 即为了提高或发展学生哪方面的能力, 不仅自己有一定规划, 也应让学生知道通过活动应使哪方面的能力得到提高。

3.学生交际能力培养问题

交际能力包括语言学能力、话语能力、社会语言学能力和交际策略。Webquest教学模式中, 教师应进行适时的指导作用, 在培养学生的语言运用能力的过程中, 不仅要考虑到学生运用的流利性, 还要考虑到正确性和得体性, 要达到正确和得体, 除了实践外, 还要有基础理论学习, 以使语言学习活动更加具有目的性和针对性。
