J.Hillis Miller在一篇讨论文学研究在网络时代的文章中(“LiteraryStudy among the Ruins”)引用Derrida的话说:“…an entire epoch of so-called literature,if not all of it,cannot survive a certain technologicalregime of telecommunications(in this respect the political regime is sec-ondary),Neither can philosophy。or psychoanalysis,Or love letters…(58)。
The availability ofacademic discourse at aU levels on the Internet brings the risk of flatteningthe structures of knowledge, making them largely invisible to the Web-surfing students or incautious scholar,Induction into a discipline is a mat-
ter not only of acquiring information but of assimilating a set of theoreticalframeworks, assumptions, and practices that can take several years tomaster。
他又指出单纯的英美文学研究会越来越边缘化,在整个英文文学研究范围中,其它地区的全球化视野会更加宽广,纽西兰、澳洲、非洲、印度东亚等以英文创作的文本会受到重视,放在文化研究的范围里,这些English studies更具全球化意义,他说;“Thefuture of literary study in the global university lies in a reconfigured Corn-parative Literature,This means a broadening to include the literature ofnon-European countries, features of cultural studies, forms of rhetoricalstudy and interactions with other art forms。”(64)。
当为教育学者,we must providestudents with the historical and methodological knowledge necessary forreflecting on the conditions under which writing becomes literature andfor using literary texts to explore how aesthetic objects relate
to other discursive objects or to broader social formations,(1z),
Shanker在论及文学与文化研究的关系时,说:“Cultural studies is areproach to literary criticism’s restricted specialization”(260),他又进一步指出:“Nevertheless,cultural studies has provided me with the oppor-tunity to purse interests in film, ethnography, popular music, and adver-tisements。as well as literature。that would have been impossible in tradi-tional literary criticism”(261),身为一文学老师,我们应该had a strongsense of the historical and political implications of literature but debatedopenly with one another over the relations among historical context,po-litical investment, and aesthetic values,学者都指出文化研究其实是文学研究在网络科技下的一项转变与生机,也为文学研究找到了社会发声的管道,证实了文学研究的社会面向与“实用性”。
