1.英文演讲 篇一

“20xx年6月5日是哈佛大学的毕业典礼,请来的演讲嘉宾是《哈利波特》的作者J.K.罗琳女士。她的演讲题目是《失败的好处和想象的重要性》(The Fringe Benefits of Failure, and the Importance of Imagination)。她几乎没有谈到哈里波特,而是说了年轻时的一些经历。虽然J·K·罗琳现在很有钱,是英国仅次于女皇的最富有的女人,但是她曾经有一段非常艰辛的日子,30岁了,还差点流落街头。她主要谈的是,自己从这段经历中学到的东西。”

以下是英文文稿和中文翻译:

Text as delivered follows.

President Faust, members of the Harvard Corporation and the Board of Overseers, members of the faculty, proud parents, and, above all, graduates,

The first thing I would like to say is thank you.Not only has Harvard given me an extraordinary honour, but the weeks of fear and nausea I have endured at the thought of giving this commencement address have made me lose weight. A win-win situation! Now all I have to do is take deep breaths, squint at the red banners and convince myself that I am at the worlds largest Gryffindor reunion.

Delivering a commencement address is a great responsibility; or so I

thought until I cast my mind back to my own graduation. The commencement speaker that day was the distinguished British philosopher Baroness Mary Warnock. Reflecting on her speech has helped me enormously in writing this one, because it turns out that I cant remember a single word she said. This liberating discovery enables me to proceed without any fear that I might inadvertently influence you to abandon promising careers in business, the law or politics for the giddy delights of becoming a gay wizard.

You seeIf all you remember in years to come is the gay wizardjoke, Ive come out ahead of Baroness Mary Warnock. Achievable goals: the first step to self improvement.

Actually, I have wr

acked my mind and heart for what I ought to say to you today. I have asked myself what I wish I had known at my own graduation, and what important lessons I have learned in the 21 years that have expired between that day and this.

I have come up with two answers. On this wonderful day when we are gathered together to celebrate your academic success, I have decided to talk to you about the benefits of failure. And as you stand on the threshold of what is sometimes called real life, I want to extol the crucial importance of imagination.

These may seem quixotic or paradoxical choices, but please bear with me.

Looking back at the 21-year-old that I was at graduation, is a slightly uncomfortable experience for the 42-year-old that she has become. Half my lifetime ago, I was striking an uneasy balance between the ambition I had for myself, and what those closest to me expected of me. I was convinced that the only thing I wanted to do, ever, was to write novels. However, my parents, both of whom came from impoverished backgrounds and neither of whom had been to college, took the view that my overactive imagination was an amusing personal quirk that would never pay a mortgage, or secure a pension. I know that the irony strikes with the force of a cartoon anvil, now.

So they hoped that I would take a vocational degree; I wanted to study English Literature. A compromise was reached that in retrospect satisfied nobody, and I went up to study Modern Languages. Hardly had my parentscar rounded the corner at the end of the road than I ditched German and scuttled off down the Classics corridor.

I cannot remember telling my parents that I was studying Classics; they might well have found out for the first time on graduation day. Of all the subjects on this planet, I think they would have been hard put to name one less useful than Greek mythology when it came to securing the keys to an executive bathroom.

I would like to make it clear, in parenthesis, that I do not blame my parents for their point of view. There is an expiry date on blaming your

parents for steering you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you. What is more, I cannot criticise my parents for hoping that I would never experience poverty. They had been poor themselves, and I have since been poor, and I quite agree with them that it is not an ennobling experience. Poverty entails fear, and stress, and sometimes depression; it means a thousand petty humiliations and hardships. Climbing out of poverty by your own efforts, that is indeed something on which to pride yourself, but poverty itself is romanticised only by fools.

What I feared most for myself at your age was not poverty, but failure. At your age, in spite of a distinct lack of motivation at university, where I had spent far too long in the coffee bar writing stories, and far too little time at lectures, I had a knack for passing examinations, and that, for years, had been the measure of success in my life and that of my peers.

I am not dull enough to suppose that because you are young, gifted and well-educated, you have never known hardship or heartbreak. Talent and intelligence never yet inoculated anyone against the caprice of the Fates, and I do not for a moment suppose that everyone here has enjoyed an existence of uuffled privilege and contentment.

However, the fact that you are graduating from Harvard suggests that you are not very well-acquainted with failure. You might be driven by

a fear of failure quite as much as a desire for success. Indeed, your conception of failure might not be too far from the average persons idea of success, so high have you already flown.

Ultimately, we all have to decide for ourselves what constitutes failure, but the world is quite eager to give you a set of criteria if you let it. So I think it fair to say that by any conventional measure, a mere seven years after my graduation day, I had failed on an epic scale. An exceptionally short-lived marriage had imploded, and I was jobless, a lone parent, and as poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless. The fears that my parents had had for me, and that I had had for myself, had both come to pass, and by every usual standard, I was the biggest failure I knew.

Now, I am not going to stand here and tell you that failure is fun. That period of my life was a dark one, and I had no idea that there was going to be what the press has since represented as a kind of fairy tale resolution. I had no idea then how far the tunnel extended, and for a long time, any light at the end of it was a hope rather than a reality. So why do I talk about the benefits of failureSimply because failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the

2.英文演讲 篇二

To begin with,Halliday and Hasan,in their Cohesion in English, have defined reference as a relation between things or facts. In this sense, reference is a device, allowing a reader or hearer of language to trace entities, events or participants in a text,as the examples extracted from the story illustrated,

"<c3>("c"stands for"clause”) Woz and I started Apple inmy parents'garage when I was 20."“<c4>We worked hard…”(participants)

“<c13>What had been the focus of my entire adult life wasgone, and it was devastating.”(event)

“<c30>It was awful-tasting medicine,but I guess the patientneeded it.”(entity)

Secondly, substitution is a relation on the lexical-grammaticallevel to avoid duplication in discourse. For instance,

“<c9>But then our visions of the future began to diverge andeventually we had a falling out.""<c10>When we did,our Board of Directors sided with him.”

This verbal substitution“did”has replaced the whole sentenceprinted in bold above. With some structure substituted though, the extracted text is still cohesive and consistent.

Next,in the book Cohesion in English,Halliday and Hasanput forward ellipsis as the form of substitution in which the item is replaced by nothing,in other words, the omission of an item. For example,

"<c35a>And that is as true for your work<c36b>as it is (true)for your lovers."

In this case of ellipsis, the adjective“true”in brackets is omittedto avoid repetition and prolixity.

Then, conjunction refers to the combination of any two texturalelements into a potentially coherent complex semantic unit.It involves the use of formal markers or conjunctions to relate words, clauses and sentences to each other,as illustrated below,

“<c16>I met with David Pachard and Bob Noyce…”(conjunction of words)

“<c42>So keep looking until you find it."(conjunction ofclauses)

“<cl0>When we did,our Board of Directors sided with him.”"<c11>So at 30 1 was out."(conjunction of sentences)

Last but not least, lexical cohesion refers to the role played bythe selection of vocabulary in organizing relations within a text and it is built up via the semantic choice. For instance,

"<c4>We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown fromjust the two of us in a garage into a$2 billion company with over4000 employees.”

In the sense of lexical cohesion, the entity of"Apple”equates tothat of“a$2 billion company”.

In a nutshell, all the kinds of cohesive devices are utilized toachieve cohesion and coherence grammatically throughout the story I have selected,or the discourse more precisely.

I.Introduction

In middle schools, how to arouse the learners’interests to learn English has been a big problem for the teachers as well as for the students. In order to deal with this problem, teachers have to explore ways to arouse the learners’interest in English teaching. In recent years, many educators do lots of experimental study on English songs Wherever on developing learners’ability or psychology, they realize the importance of English songs.Compared with past teaching methods, we can understand the value of the English songs.Songs may take up the whole class period instead of old ways.English songs can be used not only for purposeful language practice, but also for motivating students interest and enhancing students’involvement in learning English.

II.The Advantage of Using English Songs in English Teaching

Arousing Students’Interest in Learning English

Einstein once said:“Interest is the best teacher”.The students wil not feel that learning is a burden if they are interested in studying, and they will put their hearts into learning actively.Arousing the interest of the students is the key to learn English well.English songs have the meaningful lyrics and beautiful tunes, which can arouse the interests of middle school students easily. It can promote the students to throw themselves into studying enthusiastically. It also can enrich the students knowledge, open the students’mind and make up for a weakness of intelligent development.

B.Improving Students’Ability in Pronunciation and Listening

Firstly, it is useful for pronunciation. There are syllables, word stress, intonation, sentence focus, linking, rhythm in English songs. On one hand, if we emphasize the correct syllable, it is easier for the students to understand the meaning of the song. For one instance, consonants such as I and R are difficult for some of the middle school students to distinguish and pronounce. However, if the stress is placed correctly, the students will probably understand the meaning from the songs even if the consonants are unclear. On the other hand, the word stress tells us, in some case, a word is a part of speech. There are many words which are nouns when the stress is on the first syllable and verbs when the stress is on the second syllable. For example, RE-cord is a noun, while re-CORD is a verb.In addition, intonation gives us important information about sentences. It tells us a lot about a speaker’s feeling or state of mind.In every sentence, most important syllables get the most emphasis. What’s more, it is necessary for English learners to find linking in the songs. When non-native speaks’English songs seems choppy, it is because they are not linking their words.Native speakers sometimes carry the sound at the end of a word over to the beginning of the next words.By element of English songs–syllables and words intonation sentence focus, and linking can better evaluate their own English pronunciation.

Secondly, English songs also can improve listening.Listening is one of the most challenging skills for our students to develop.Songs is the excellent way for training listening. Our aim is to cultivate students all-round ability to use English, with the special attention paid to listening ability.Listening is traditional practice. As well known, the cultivation of listening in English is a slow, long-process, and anyone who wants to deal with the English language through the textbooks al the time, people cannot really learn English.Every day there is another exciting emergence of the music album, which makes the choice. We have a huge space, different styles, different rhythm, different singers songs in English so that we can be in the“Instruction in listening”.

Broadening Students’Knowledge of English Culture

English songs are an important part of foreign culture, but also daily lives are more exposed to one of the English language corpus Songs is a description of the media and cultural knowledge.English songs are integral part of foreign cultural and an important embodiment If the teachers make songs described as a medium of cultura knowledge, it’s sure that students can be refreshed. And such a vivid way of learning is more close to life and easier to arouse the enthusiasm of students, but also more acceptable.

Increasing Students’Memory of English

Now, more and more scientists find that benefit of songs, which can increase human’s memory. In a song, there are many sentences which contain many words, and those words form into some of images with a specific sentence, which will make people have a good memory Then we will bring attention to the memory of the above sentences, you will find that you can write it down naturally. It is proved by the fac that most people can still remember the lines to their favorite primary school even after 20 or 30 years.Newham (1995-1996) suggests that the patterns produced through rhyme are known to aid memory and enhance language learning. He states that, “the primarily righ hemisphere-oriented process of music making can enhance the process of language acquisition and memory which place demands upon the lef hemisphere”.Thus songs presumably enhance and stimulate memory because dual coding leads to deeper processing and better memory.

Waking up the Students’Aesthetic Ability As a teaching style, which resulted in the crossing of two

subjects, its content is myriad. As a new teaching viewpoint, it prefers to unite subject and object harmoniously.Feelings are bound them together and unite them to form one.The subjects are teachers and students. The subject’s sense of participation is a key factor in class. Therefore, the class is carefully prepared for every student and full of resource.Language Teaching Humanities are responsible for training the students to awaken students’sense of respect to humanity and the people’s own sense of dignity.Such as:Hallelujah at the beginning of the piano is very shocking, singer Rufus Wainwright clear, and mellow voice, and its high-bass kind of comfortable with the transformation to the students to make sense of the soul to be promoted.“It’s not a cry you can hear at night. It’s not somebody who’s seen the light. It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah”.What a stirring lyrics! Thus, education is not the people have become trivial, but should respect people’s feeling of a sense of people’s souls become more noble.

Reviewing Knowledge

In learning in general in the future tense, the teacher can choose Boyz II Men to sing I Will Get There very rhythm of the song to enable students to appreciate at the same time review the tenses studied.Learning subjunctive mood, we can allow students to appreciate the song If I Never Knew You.In introducing some American slang, such as:What’cha=What have you, what do you, what are you gonna=going to, etc, can allow students to appreciate the song:I’m Gonna Get You Good. The lyrics are getcha=get you, wantcha=want you, betcha=bet you or you bet, wanna=want to slang and so on.Understanding these informal English language learners is not without a benefit.

It’s cool. 酷毙了!

实战PK:

GG:I will take a trip to Europe next week.

下周我要去欧洲旅行。

MM:It’s cool.

酷毙了!

洋味禅经:

如果你不会用“cool”,那你还敢说你是年轻人吗?!要知道“cool”可是天天被年轻人挂在嘴边儿的口头禅,不管你想赞叹什么,反正都能用得上它。

此外,它还被广泛运用于表达辣妹正点、帅哥犀利上。

All right,I gotta go. 好的,我得走了。

实战PK:

GG:It was really nice talking to you.

和你谈话真开心。

MM:Me too. All right,I gotta go.

我也是。好了,我得走了。

洋味禅经:

无论你是有急事要走,还是你想结束让你厌烦的谈话,这句话都能让你优雅地全身而退。

It’s not like that. 并非如此。

实战PK:

MM:Do you lose your heart to another girl?

你是不是爱上别人了?

GG:It’s not like that.

并非如此。

洋味禅经:

这句话频繁地出现于小两口儿的对话之中,当一方指责另一方变心时,被指责方便会如此解答,即反正不管事实怎样,咱就是抵死不承认。

Here you are. 给你,请吧。

实战PK:

GG:May I have a cup of tea?

能给我杯茶吗?

MM:Here you are.

给你,请吧。

洋味禅经:

这句话可是老外使用最频繁的生活口头禅。当你要把东西交给别人,或有人向你要东西时都要用上这句话,但是当有人向你要钱时,估计你可能就不会这么痛快地用这句话啦。

Guess what? 你猜怎么着?

实战PK:

GG: Guess what? They are getting divorced!

你猜怎么着?他们要离婚!

MM:Really? How long have they been married?

真的吗?他们结婚多久了?

洋味禅经:

在八卦闲谈时,这句话极受宠爱,因为它能最快速地吊起对方的胃口,让对方投入百分之二百的注意力于你接下来要发表的言论,所以,它绝对是卖关子的必备口头禅。

How are you feeling? 你觉得怎么样?

实战PK:

MM: This type of skirt is all the go. How are you feeling?

这条裙子很时髦,你觉得怎么样?

GG:It’s cool! You should have it.

很棒!你应该买一条。

洋味禅经:

这句话可用于询问对方的意见,也可用于询问对方的身体及精神状况。

Cheers! Bottoms up. 干杯!要一口喝完。

实战PK:

GG: Cheers! Bottoms up.

干杯!要一口喝完。

MM: OK. Cheers!

好啊。干杯!

洋味禅经:

“Cheers”大家应该都不陌生,但“Bottoms up.”应该就没有几个人知道了,它是指一口喝光的意思,即我们的“感情深,一口闷!”

What gives? 出了什么事?

实战PK:

GG:You seem to be in bad mood. What gives?

你看起来心情不好,出了什么事?

MM:I lost my money in an evil hour.

倒霉透了,我丢钱啦!

洋味禅经:

“What gives?”是老外的习惯用语,意为:怎么了?出什么事儿啦?当我们看到对方的状态不对头时,为表关心,我们就可以这么问。此外,当我们想知道某些事情带来了哪些影响或哪些后果时,我们也可以这样问。

Let it be. 顺其自然吧。

实战PK:

MM: Oh,my! What shall I do?

糟糕!我該怎么办啊?

GG: Don’t worry. Let it be.

别担心!顺其自然吧。

洋味禅经:

当有人因某事焦头烂额地问你怎么办时,如果你要有办法,就尽量想办法;如果实在没办法,或是做什么都没有用时就可以对他说“Let it be.”即:顺其自然吧!反正做什么也没用。

Do you really mean it? 此话当真?

实战PK:

GG: Dear,I won the jackpot!

亲爱的,我中大奖啦!

MM: Do you really mean it?

此话当真?

洋味禅经:

当对方叽里呱啦地说出一件事,而你觉得那件事的可信度很低时,你就可以对对方说出这句话。还有就是当对方说出了一个天大的喜事,而你激动到难以接受时,也可以用这句话来表达自己的情感。

There you go. 那先就这样了。

实战PK:

GG:There you go. I have other plans.

那先就这样了。我还有其他事。

MM:OK. Bye.

好的,再见。

洋味禅经:

当你想结束对方在你面前聒噪或想拒绝他的纠缠时,你就可以用这句话,它的意思很明显,就是希望对方停止目前正在做的事。此外,这句话还有鼓励他人、为他人打气的意思,多用于比赛竞技之时。

After you. 你先请。

实战PK:

GG: After you.

你先请。

MM: Thank you!

谢谢!

洋味禅经:

这句话多表达对对方的尊敬,如上电梯时女士优先,或吃饭时请他人先动筷子等。这句话多用于比较正式的场合。

Knock on wood. 老天保佑。

实战PK:

GG:I nearly lost my purse! Knock on wood.

我差点儿丢了钱包!老天保佑。

MM:You should take care of it.

你应该小心点!

洋味禅经:

美国人认为敲木头是乞求好运的意思,“Knock on wood”相当于我们所说的“好险!”有种劫后余生的侥幸意味。

Couldn’t be better. 再好不过了。

实战PK:

GG:How are you making out in Beijing?

你在北京过得怎么样?

MM:Couldn’t be better.

再好不过了。

洋味禅经:

这句话的意思是向对方表达自己好得不能再好了,是一种相当活泼俏皮的表达方式。当然,对于想看你笑话的人,这句话也能让他气得冒烟。

Better than nothing.有总比没有强。

实战PK:

GG: The beer taste bad.

这啤酒真难喝。

MM: Better than nothing.

有总比没有强。

洋味禅经:

总有一些“龟毛”的人在有限的条件中挑三拣四,例如东西难吃、待遇不好等,遇到这种情况,你就可以直接告诉他:有总比没有强,你要不喜欢,就闪一边去。这句话用成语解释即:聊胜于无。

英文通知写作说明中经常交待活动举办者的身份和单位,写作时应做相应表达,使用Professor Smith from Nanjing University will come to visit our school.等句型。英文通知还应有自身特定的格式,如开头应顶格写上:Ladies and gentlemen或 Boys and girls或Dear students。同时还应注意常识性语句的使用,如正文部分往往可以写上Now, I’d like to introduce something about…to you./Everyone is welcome to take an active part in it. /Don’t forget the time and address./Wish you to have a pleasant time./ That’s all, thank you.等常识性语句。

2.语法正确

因通知介绍即将举行的活动,因此要体现一般将来时的时态特点,写作时应认真考虑所写内容在时间上是否真正指向未来,如果的确如此,应将一般将来时的时态落实到每一个句子的每一个动词上去,以确保语言的准确性。

同时应注意尽可能避免使用特长句来介绍活动的时间、地点、主题、出席活动的对象,而采用结构平衡对称和谐的句子来表达文意。有些同学喜欢使用这样的特长句:All the students in our school should attend the lecture on the present international situation will be given by Professor Smith comes from Beijing University on the fifth floor of the teaching building at eight o’clock this Sunday morning.这种表达语句错乱,文意难懂,宜改成:Professor Smith from Beijing University will give us a lecture on the present international situation. The lecture will be given on the fifth floor of the teaching building at eight o’clock this Sunday morning.这种表达结构匀称,语句通顺,准确性明显提高。

3.用词准确

写英文通知时,不少词汇是有规律地出现的。如give a lecture, give a talk, have a debate, take notes, hold a party, give a ball, attend the meeting/party/ball, hold a class/school/sports meeting, talk about sth., make a speech, take an active part in sth.

交待活动先后顺序时可使用first, second, then, finally, at last等过渡性词汇;交待活动时间变换可使用in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, at night等过渡性词汇;介绍活动内容可使用besides, also, too等过渡性词汇;介绍地点变换可使用here, there, on the one side, on the other side等过渡性词汇。这些过渡性词汇的使用对增强文章的连贯性、逻辑性和可读性有效提高文章的表达档次很有好处。
