听说教学之所以薄弱, 主要原因在于教材与教法存在缺陷。传统的听说教材通常基于抽象的语言能力培养, 按照“理想”的语言交流方式人为地编制而成, 呈现的是一个“规范化、流程化”的操作模式, 缺乏真实语言的生动性和灵活性。现如今提倡的“教师为主导, 学生为主体”的课堂教学模式相对传统的学生被动接受的课堂有较大进步, 但具备内驱动力的自主学习还是很缺乏。近年来, 语料库语言学的发展及其在语言教学中的应用为这两个问题提供了崭新的研究视角。
一、语料库应用于教学的背景
基于语料库的语言教学在国外已形成一种趋势。近十几年来, 将语料库直接应用于外语教学主要体现在:将语料库的理念与工具延伸到教学大纲设置, 教材编写和课堂活动设计等方面, 探讨小型语料库在教学中的作用。在国内, 语料库语言学用于教学实践的研究仍处于探索阶段, 研究大多局限于词汇、语法、阅读层面, 在听说教学中的运用较少, 并且此类研究常见于本科院校, 少见于高职院校。
语料库应用于听说教学有着多重理论依据。克拉申的“语言习得与语言学习”和“语言输入论”强调:输入必须是可理解的、有趣且密切相关的、不是以语法为大纲的, 必须是大量的。学生对于大量的可理解的输入进行吸收加工, 就会很自然地出现产生语言的输出能力。语料库丰富的语料来源和真实的语境很好地满足了克拉申这一理论对“输入”的要求。
根据图式理论, 语言的习得与发展可以被视为一种图式的建构过程。语言使用者在相近的语境中不断运用相似的形式之后, 逐步形成抽象语言知识, 从而发展语言能力。利用语料库进行教学, 能让学习者接触到大量、自然、真实、语境类似的语料, 为认知图式的建构、确认、扩建和重构提供良好的语言环境。
二语习得领域的“语块理论”认为, 尽管语法规则有强大的生成能力, 能够使说话者生成无限多的从未听过或说过的句子, 但事实上语言运用的编码在很大程度上依赖的是“预置语块”, 而不是语法规则。Lewis曾指出, 语言是由语法化的词汇组成, 而不是词汇化的语法组成。研究表明, 语块不仅可以提高学习者使用英语的流利性和准确程度, 能减少语言和语用方面的错误。因此, 语块教学应成为英语教学的一项重要任务。
二、小型语料库的优势
诸如英国国家语料库 (BNC) 、当代美国英语语料库 (COCA) 等国外著名语料库, 他们的建设是以大型、代表性为追求目标 (BNC、COCA规模都达到数亿词以上) , 对于词典编撰、真实语言的体系性研究尤为重要。但运用到教学, 如此大型的语料库所产生的信息可能会构成“数据冗余”, 繁多的语料和复杂的语境反而会成为学习的负担。此外, 大型语料库通常价格昂贵, 其可及性较低, 在实际课堂教学和课后学习中使用较为不便。
相对而言, 由教师根据自己听说教学需要, 建立针对性强的小型语料库, 直接服务于教学目的, 不仅在使用成本上实现了节约, 而且能为教学带来更有效的辅助作用, 使得语料库技术融入听说教学实践不再流于形式。
内容方面, 个人小型语料库针对性强, 适合自己教学对象的难度和兴趣, 语料能不断扩展, 及时更新。能扩展学习者语言输入范围, 弥补教科书单一的教学内容, 提供最真实可靠的、可自由选择的语言信息。使听说教学的内容不是建立在人为设计的总是“合作成功”的语言上, 而是建立在真实语料基础上, 学生学到的语言更加接近生活实际, 避免听说教材的“理想化”和“完美性”带来的负面影响, 增强学生运用英语口语交流的信心和兴趣。
形式方面, 将自上而下的“以教师为中心”的教学与自下而上的“以学生为中心”的自主学习相结合。在教学过程中利用语料库工具, 增加“检索观察”、“语境反复呈现”等新手段, 使学生语言图式的构建更容易。利用语料库的可检索性可以归纳常用和专题语块, 增加语块的相关教学, 提高学生英语听力的理解力和英语口语的流利性。
三、个人小型剧本语料库的建设
此小型剧本语料库的目的是直接服务于听说教学, 对现有教材做优质补充。考虑到高职学生听力和口语基础相对较弱且学习信心和兴趣不足, 我们选取的语料标准首先必须是“不难的”, 其次必须是“有趣的”。鉴于此, 我们的语料来源为美国情景喜剧Friends共10季 (236集) 的字幕文本。该剧故事情节的生活化、语言的难度和生动性符合高职听说教学的要求。个人小型剧本语料库的建设大致有以下三个步骤:
第一, 从字幕网站http://www.shooter.cn/下载Friends全十季的英文字幕文本。
第二, 利用Edit Pad Pro、Power GREP、Super Batch Renamer等文本处理软件对字幕文本进行格式转换、清洁、重命名, 保存到字幕语料库文件夹下。
第三, 利用Tree Tagger标注工具对文本进行词性赋码。
经过这三步, 个人小型剧本语料库基本建设完成, 共102万词, 该小型语料库具备与其相对应的视频资料库。
该小型剧本语料库的语料来源单一, 属于“同源”语料, 交际语境的相关性强, 避免了对大型语料库进行索引时出现的“缺少可理解背景”的尴尬, 在听说教学时学生能较快地进入语境。
四、小型剧本语料库在听说课中的应用
将英语原版影视应用到高职英语的听说教学在国内已颇为常见。原版影视将试听说融为一体, 语言内容和表现形式既具娱乐性又具学习价值, 最大限度地吸引了学习者的注意力。但传统课堂应用往往局限于影视片段的视听和台词解释, 无法以宏观的视角来看待语言现象。语料库技术与影视剧本的结合, 正好弥补了这一缺陷, 使得影视作品、影视剧本能够更好地服务于听说教学。
语料库强大的索引和N-gram词表功能, 使得影视剧本在英语听说的教学实践中得以多方应用。以下是课堂实践中我们可以做的尝试。
(一) 呈现语境, 凸显强搭配
通过Power Conc检索软件, 以KWIC形式呈现各种词汇、语块、结构在语境中的用法。语料库特有的语境共现界面可以凸显位于检索项两侧的各种语境特征, 形成一个注意力的聚焦点。结合视频资料, 在视觉和听觉上引起学生的注意和兴趣, 加深其对学习内容的印象。例如, “thing”这个单词是学生最初学到的几个英语单词之一, 但教科书中很少单独用到, 常用到的往往是something, anything, nothing, everything等。但通过Friends剧本语料库, 我们发现thing一词应用之广泛出乎中国学习者的意料。我们检索单词thing并sort L1 (凸显thing左侧第一个词) 进行排列, 结果如图1所示。
引导学生观察检索结果, 会发现以上索引行中thing左侧都有一个加引号的定语, 如“getting on with your life”, “I never want to get married”, “hat”, “it’s all for her”等, 可以发现, thing之前的定语形式颇为随意。事实上, thing作为模糊语, 在口语中几乎可以指代一切难以准确形容或不便言明的事物。这种形式的表达不符合书面语的规范, 在经过人为加工的教科书中也不可能出现, 然而却是最地道的口语表达。结合语料相关的视频片段, 学生能很快理解并掌握“thing”的这一用法。
再如在“赞美与应答”的口语练习中, 教师事先运用正则表达式“look_S+s+S+_JJ”检索, 大致可获得在“look+adj.”这个赞美句型中各种赞美词的使用频率, 除去非赞美的形容词, 结果如表1所示。
通过频率排列, 学生对此类结构中常用赞美词一目了然。词频列表的形式给学生以视觉上的冲击, 从宏观上认知赞美语的常用词。通过检索语料, 我们很容易找到相关视频资料, 教师也可就“赞美”这一主题将Friends全十季中的赞美与应答片段做一合辑, 让学生通过模仿学习, 角色扮演进行操练。
关于词汇、语块、结构在语境中的用法, 教师可在教会学生简单的检索方法后, 分配任务, 引导学生进行自主的探索性学习, 再以小组汇报等形式讨论学习成果。
(二) 建构语言图式, 建立话题词库
利用语料库的语境共现, 提取与话题密切相关的词语, 这些词按照一定的语义联系结成网络, 构成本话题的心理词库, 心理词库越丰富, 可调用的语言表达就越多, 交流就更顺畅。传统的听说训练缺乏“图式”的建构, 学生学到的单词和短语孤立存在, 语言学习与交际实际存在一定脱节, 口语交流常常“言之无物”。利用剧本语料库, 我们可以梳理和建构话题图式, 开展任务型教学, 提高教学效果。例如, 当我们涉及《新视野听说教程》第一册第七单元有关wedding的话题时, 可以以“wedding”为关键词设计语境共现, 通过凸显wedding的语境使学生高度注意与之搭配的词, 并通过归纳总结, 构建wedding这一话题的图式。具体操作如下:键入正则表达式“wedding_S+s+S+_NS+”, 并凸显wedding右侧第一词, 观察wedding作为修饰语的情况, 可以罗列出wedding涉及的具体事物, 如图2所示。
我们可以同样的方式检索wedding前的修饰语, wedding前的动词, wedding左二、左三、右二、右三等词, 观察检索结果, 归纳和分类wedding话题图式的相关词汇, 如下页表2所示。
上述分类过程可作为学生的小组作业合作完成。通过分析概括, 引导学生掌握相关的语言表达形式, 再利用分类词汇所构建的话题词语网络, 进行小组对话练习。小型剧本语料库所具备的语料真实、语境部分重叠的优势, 为学生提供“反复接触近似语境”的机会, 能让学生在特定的语境中反复运用相似的语言形式, 更好地构建语言图式, 在口语交流中能“言之有物”。
(三) 强化语块学习, 由量变到质变
Altenberg和Granger发现, 大约70%的日常口语都是由语块构成的。熟练掌握语块能减轻说话人的编码负担, 减少大脑语言加工的时间, 加快语言输出的速度, 提高语言使用的准确性和流利性。然而, 高职英语学习者对语块的使用面太窄, 能熟练使用的语块非常有限, 如I think, in my opinion, I want to, a lot of, agree with you等。高职学生普遍缺乏对语块的大量积累, 实时的听力理解速度跟不上, 口语表达更加受到严重的影响。若积累了一定量的语块, 学习者在交流过程中便能从记忆中随取随用, 相比自己造句要容易得多, 犯错误的可能也要更小。因此, 在平时的听说教学中增加语块教学是非常必要和有效的策略。
从广义上来说, 语块包含了两个或两个以上所有经常性一起出现的固定表达, 如小品词you know, I mean, sort of, things like that, that sort of thing等, 人际交流语you know what, I tell you what, there you go, here we go等。
较之词典或直觉, 语料库使得搭配特征更直观、更充分、更科学。语料库在语块教学方面的作用体现在两方面:一是提取高频率语块;二是将特定语块在语料库中集中呈现。
语料库应用于教学强调频率优先, 主张常用词语、常用结构、常用义项先教先学。例如, 我们在自建剧本语料库中检索三词语块, 获得以下部分结果, 如表3所示。
我们发现, 在日常口语中, 有些语块使用频率相当高。排名前十的三词语块中, 多是说话者表达对命题认知、愿望、义务、计划、能力等的“立标语块”。就语块本身而言, 都是由最简单的单词构成, 高职学生大多也不陌生, 但要在口语表达中脱口而出, 就另当别论了。值得一提的是排第三位的语块“you know what”, 该语块的含义有两种可能, 一是“you know what…?”, what引导了一个宾语从句;二是“you know what”作为引导话题的习语独立使用, 功能上相当于话语标记词“look”和“listen”, 用于为说话人将要提供的信息、提出的建议、发表的观点等做铺垫, 以此来引发听话人的关注或兴趣。为了精确作为后者使用的频率, 我们进一步检索, 在语料库中输入正则表达式“you know what[, ?]” (这么做排除了what引导宾语从句的情况) , 得出230例, 在上述三元语块的频率排序中可列入第七的位置。然而, 母语中使用如此频繁的语块, 在我们的教科书中却几乎不见踪影。从这个层面来说, 语料库确确实实可作为教科书的优质补充, 使我们以科学的方式归纳出高频语块, 优先教给学生。
在确定了要教给学生的语块后, 可以通过语料库的检索, 让语块在语境中集中呈现, 满足语言输入的“量”的要求。从上述检索中发现“you know what”是日常用语的高频词, 把该语块在语料库中的呈现展示给学生, 并作口头模仿和操练, 如下页图3所示。
高职学生在剧本语料库中接触到的是最真实、生动、丰富的口语范例, 文本与视频的结合在具备趣味性的同时, 也缓解了高职学生学习英语时的心理压力, 降低了焦虑水平。经过大量的练习后, 将“输入”的内容内化为自身的语言能力, 形成语言环境反射, 以后遇到类似语境就能较快地调出相应语块, 达到较顺利地“输出”了。
在高职听说教学实践中, 自建小型剧本语料库有着大型通用语料库无法比拟的优势, 融合了教师为中心的归纳展示和学生为中心的自主探索, 优化了任务型教学和合作学习。在教学过程中利用语料库技术, 呈现词汇、语块、结构等在语境中的强搭配;帮助学生建构语言内容图式, 建立话题词库;增加语块教学, 强化学生的语块意识, 从而提高了语言的流利性和准确性。然而, 我们在教学中运用语料库技术时, 也不得不面对高职学生在英语学习方面注意力和兴趣不高两大弱点。因此, 我们试图将文本语料和相应的视频资料相结合, 从感官上最大限度引起学生的兴趣和注意, 优化“输入”, 提高有效“输出”的能力。本文涉及的教学模式, 重心在课堂, 检索到的语料与相应视频未能有链接, 需要教师在课前通过搜索、剪切、重组视频资料来配合对应的语言点, 若能实现语料检索与视频点播同步, 并且将其共享于校园网, 供学生自主学习。那么, 以学生为中心的自主探索学习将更加名副其实。这也是高职英语听说教学值得探索的方向。
摘要:根据高职听说教学的需要建立的小型剧本语料库, 契合了高职学生的水平特征和学习特点, 融合了以教师为中心的归纳展示和以学生为中心的自主探索, 优化了任务型教学和合作学习, 在教学实践中具有很高的应用价值。自建小型剧本语料库在英语听说教学中可应用于三个方面:利用语料库检索技术和语境共现, 凸显词汇、语块、结构在语境中的用法;建构语言内容图式, 建立话题词库;提取高频语块, 强化语块教学。

CiCi: Wait! I remember well that you all miss the food from your hometown.Look, what are these?

一、小学生涉猎剧本学习需学生建立兴趣
学生看剧是相当有兴趣的,因为作为剧,声音、色彩、光亮和形象无不具有。但作为剧的脚本,只有演员才可感兴趣,也才可以看得懂,或者就是看得比较入门,也因此才能够极为感兴趣。对于小学生而言,去阅读剧本,应当说其难度比较大。并不是剧本之语言有多复杂,而是剧本本身的表现形式是小学生闻所未闻、见所未见的。小学生对那些见所未见闻所未闻的东西能够建立起最起码的阅读兴趣,应当说是可能性不是很大,甚至就是完全意义上的没有。对此,作为阅读教学,作为已经被选入教材的剧本,我们则应当让学生去接触,而且应当让学生去极有兴趣地接触。怎样让学生去饶有兴趣的接触剧本呢?小学中年级有剧本,那是关于公仪休拒收礼物的独幕剧剧本,笔者为了起先就建立起学生的学习兴趣,未曾让学生接触教材文本时,就让学生这样去接触与剧本有关的东西。如一开始,就这样去了解学生,你们喜欢看电影、电视等表演性的东西吗?同学们回答得相当的直接:“喜欢!”然后告诉学生电影电视是那样的好看,演员也是那样演得好。但他们总是依靠一种模子去演出来的,这模子就是人们常常见到的剧本。在让学生听到这些后,又去提醒学生,这所谓的提醒实质意义是一种激将。剧本不是容易看得懂的,需要花细工才能真正意义上学好,如果稍有一点点的马虎,就有可能像是猪八戒吃的人参果———食而不知其味。这样的激趣和激将,将学生的阅读兴趣很好地调动起来。
二、小学生涉猎剧本学习需学生形成认知
小学生一见到剧本,还真有说不尽道不完的乐趣,也有着许许多多的疑惑,阅读时也出现许多令人啼笑皆非的现象。譬如,对剧本的朗读,人物对话的提示语以及相关对白前的动作行为是不需要去读的,学生也将其读了出来。这应当是我们的失误,这应当在学生一接触到文本时就必须建立起一定的认知,也就是说剧本与其他文本是一定区别的,需要给学生以一定的说明,也就是比较充分意义上的剧本知识的传输。如让学生去知道剧本主要由剧中人物的对话、独白、旁白和舞台指示组成。对话也好、独白也好、就是那些旁白都采用的是代言体,一般的剧本就是这样,但戏曲、歌剧等剧本则常用唱词来表现,像课本中的则都是一般的剧本。但光对此进行介绍还没有完全到位,还需要让学生去知道剧本中的舞台指示等内容,这些内容都是以剧作者的口气来写的叙述性的文字说明,包括对剧情发生的时间、地点的交代,对剧中人物的形象特征、形体动作及内心活动的描述,对场景、气氛的说明,以及对布景、灯光、音响效果等方面的要求。这些内容一般多以括号加以括上,这些内容对演员的表演起着较好的指示作用,也对导演起着导演的指示作用。就是对我们一般的人,在阅读感悟人物形象时,也需要对这些指示性内容有个大致的了解。在读其对话、独白或旁白时,浏览一下指示性的内容,对朗读所必须使用的语调、语气和节奏都有很大的帮助。

Rick: I’m here about the job you advertised in today’s paper。
Boss A: (looks him over) You look like a student。 Our work is very hard。 Are you sure to join us?
Rick: Hey! Don’t belittle students。 I am full of energy! You don’t need to worry about me。
Boss A: I know。 O。k。 You can start to work。 Good luck!
Rick thinks that it is easy to get a job。 He looks a little cocky。 But he starts the jobs like carrying heavy package。 It’s very hard。 Poor Rick looks a little tired。
Rick: (a little angry) What a hard work it is! To do this! And to do that! The boss treats me as a superman? Or hoax me!?
The man who is also a worker walks through the place where Rick is。
Worker: Hey! Chick! Why don’t you go home to drink milk?
