一、理工科高校学生成才观现状一瞥
以笔者所在的理工科高等院校为例, 2013年普通高考招生计划中文科专业拟录取350人, 不到总招生人数3680人的十分之一。理工类学生学习总体特点为对专业学习十分重视, 欠缺人文思考与人文情怀, 尤其对于个人“成才观”的养成还处于原始的模糊感知阶段。我项目组成员设计了一组有关学生成才观的调查问卷。选取理工科专业两个班学生作为调查对象;发出问卷100份, 收回有效问卷98份。其中问卷第6题“你觉得目前你是哪一类学生?”的分析中, 有72人选择了B选项“知道未来形势严峻, 但现在很茫然, 不知道如何努力”。这充分表明, 有相当一部分学生对于自己的未来及个人价值, 没有真实的、可触的认识。对于理工科高校学生除了院系辅导员及相关负责老师在日常工作交流中的有益灌输和启发外, 学生很少能够有参与到关于“成才观”问题的思考中来。

问卷第5题“您认为自己价值观的确立, 受到什么影响最大?”的答案中, 有60人次选择了“家庭教育”, 29人次选择了“学校教育”, 这说明学生普遍认为, 家庭和学校是个人价值观形成的主要渠道。理工科高校学生如同其他大学生一样, 在进入大学学习后摆脱了高中时期家长的“时时看管”, 家庭因素对于学生人生观和价值观养成的影响力大大削弱。加之理工科院校学生接触人文思考, 尤其是对于“成才观”这个重要问题的思考机会是少之又少。而大学英语教学课堂其实是一个未被重视的成才观“培养皿”。高校新生入学两年内都会开设《大学英语》课程, 学期总学时最低也在48学时, 某些学周较长的学期可达90学时, 《大学英语》课程学时总数在理工科学生每学期的总学时数中绝对是“重头戏”。目前绝大多数大学英语教材均使用每单元选取一两篇课文的编辑形式, 课文内容一般会涉及政治、社会、文化和经济等各个方面。如果课文选得好, 内容贴切, 积极向上, 发人思考, 大学英语课堂就会变成大学生正确成才观有效的培养阵地。
三、《大学体验英语综合教程》中成才观相关课文的分析
《大学体验英语综合教程》由高等教育出版社出版, 是普通高等教育“十一五”国家级规划教材。该教材第三版共分四册, 每册8个单元, 每单元配有Passage A和Passage B共两篇课文。笔者对该套教材课文作了梳理, 其总数为64篇, 其中课文主题与大学生成才观直接相关的就有20篇, 占总四册教材总篇数的31.25%, 具体内容如下图所示。
这些课文材料的内容在课堂讲解过程中, 教师都会有意无意地促使学生思考课文内容, 总结作者观点, 内化蕴含的道理, 从而让学生潜移默化接收到其中“隐性”的大学生成才观教育, 进而引导当代大学生如何养成正确的个人成才观。
四、一些疑问
在讨论大学英语课堂教学在理工科高校学生成才观养成中的作用问题时, 很多人都会持怀疑态度, 在理论高度及具体操作层面都有很多值得探讨的地方, 主要集中在以下方面。
1. 大学英语不是主要教语言技巧吗?
怎么开始承载思想道德教育内容了?这正体现了很多人对英语教育的误读。不可否认, 英语教学是第二语言教学, 它主要包括语音、词汇、语法及篇章结构知识的讲授。但对于成功的语言教学来说, 最重要的是双语语言文化交际能力的培养。要达到这一目的, 就必须让学生对于课文内容, 思想观点有深刻认识。上述图表显示了课文与大学生成才观的有机契合。英语教师在分析篇章内容结构时, 通常会反复地操练学生的阅读、总结等技巧, 当学生完全掌握课文内容时, 就会做到一种无意识的成才观培养。
2. 一线英语教师们会有这样的学生成才观培养意识吗?
目前教学一线的英语教师确实在有意识地培养学生正确的成才观方面欠缺自发性和主动性, 这与社会对大学任课教师的工作职责定性不无关系。随着高等教育及管理的发展, 高校各部门职责愈发精细化。公众对于任课教师的工作, 一般定义在“传道、授业、解惑”, 而“育人”这个职能则似乎责无旁贷地被仅限于高校辅导员老师的本职工作中。其实, 在当今中国高校教育发展的潮流中, 老师应该是“学生的学习引路人”, 是“生活的指导者”, 甚至“人生的方向标”。特别是理工科高校大学英语教师在课堂教学中可以结合实际教学内容, 利用理工科学生较为新奇的人文气息, 引导学生发现自我社会价值, 逐步形成正确的成才观。
3. 理工科院校大学英语课堂教学对学生成才观的养成能有多大影响?
这个领域前人鲜有思考。究竟理工科高校大学英语教学中有意识地引导对学生成才观有多大的影响, 我们确实难以界定。大学英语课堂教学固然不能替代原有的高校学生思想教育体系, 但其在理工科高校学生成长观养成这一问题上的作用可以用之前的“锦上添花”来形容。大学生的成才观养成主要来源于学校的德育工作、学生个人家庭教育以及学生交际圈的影响。大学英语教学, 尤其对于理工科高校学生而言, 是他们能够接触到个人成才观思考领域的一个重要辅助途径, 是高校学生成才观教育的有益补充。
五、对理工科高校英语课堂的展望
理工科高校学生由于自身专业课程特点, 在四年的大学课堂学习中很少接触人文类课程, 鲜有机会在课堂中探讨类成才观话题, 其本身对于个人成才缺乏系统的认识和有效的引导。而大学英语课堂教学中不乏与大学生成才观养成相关的文章。这为理工科高校深入开展学生成才教育, 提供了有效的实践阵地。如果一线大学英语教师能够在课下留意积累关于大学生成才观的理论知识, 并在自己的课堂实践教学中结合实际教学内容有意“安插”相关的思考与讨论, 势必可以将我们大学英语教育又赋予更深层次的教育意义, 也会为理工科高校学生的未来成才观养成开辟一条新途径。

一、大学英语的听说课现状
在全国的大学英语教学改革中,听说教学已经受到了越来越多的重视,除了传统的听说法,有许多新的教学法都进入听说课堂并且取得了较好的教学效果,如任务型教学法、情境教学法等。然而由于各种因素的限制,听说课的课堂教学仍然存在一些问题。
1. 教学时间、教学内容有限。
普遍而言,大学英语的学时正在受到压缩,课程强度增加,听说课的课时只占总课时的三分之一甚至四分之一左右,在这么短的课时内,教师想要让学生切实有效的提高听说能力有较大难度。
2. 教学方法单一,课堂互动少,学生学习兴趣不高。
大部分的听力课都只是讲教材上的习题,内容相对枯燥,授课模式也以“老师问学生答”为主,缺乏趣味性,难以保证学生整堂课或整个学期的专注力,使得听力水平提高效率低,甚至有时候口语部分更是被忽略。
3. 学生自主学习能力弱。
通常以教师为中心的传统教学模式下,学生主要是被动接受,不仅缺乏学习积极性,往往也会自信不足,对于课堂发言或者课堂活动多有焦虑、回避的心理。学生的好奇心和求知欲不易被调动,自学能力的培养自然也无从谈起。
以上的教学问题并不是独立存在的,彼此之间交叉影响,相互渗透,很难通过一两种教学手段就能彻底改变。需要教师通过教学模式、角色定位的转变来做出系统的、长期的调整方能显出效果。
二、翻转课堂应用在听说教学的优势
翻转课堂是近几年新兴的一种课堂教学模式,相比起传统课堂的教师先在课堂上讲授,然后课下布置作业复习巩固,翻转课堂将教师知识传授放在课前,教师通过设计教学视频等课前学习素材让学生提前进行学习,课堂上,以学生一起答疑解惑、讨论交流,从而完成教学目标。
翻转课堂从产生至今已经运用在多个学科、多种层次的教学中,均取得了不错的教学效果。诚然,没有一种教学模式是万能灵药,能解决所有的问题,适用于所有班级,取得最好的教学效果。但是在当前的听说课现状下,翻转课堂的引入确实是一种较为有效的尝试。
1. 有效延长教学时间,提高学习效率。前文中提到听说课的课时少是一个限制教学效果的重要因素。作为大学教师,在无法自主改变教学大纲和教学计划的情况下,通过翻转课堂中课前学习的方式,有效地节省除了课堂的教学时间,可以将其用于学生无法独立完成、需要教师指导的教学任务,或者根据班级情况,增加课本外的内容,切实做到因材施教,有效提高学生听说能力。
2. 教学形式多样,课堂互动增强,有助于提高学生的学习兴趣和自信。
在翻转课堂的模式中,由于学生提前观看了教学视频,明确了学习的重点与难点,因此更容易融入课堂学习,激发学习兴趣和学习动机。在课堂活动中一旦得到话语权,便能真正的参与进来,而不是被动地回答教师问题。同时,因为课前的学习和准备,降低了课堂发言的焦虑和紧张,增加了自信,容易建立较为积极、主动的交流氛围。
3. 培养学生自主学习能力。
“授人以鱼不如授人以渔”,我们的教学目标除了帮助学生建构知识体系,更重要的是培养学生的思维方式和学习能力。翻转课堂中,教师由知识的传授者和主宰者变为学生获取知识的脚手架。学生虽然还是需要得到教师的教授和指导,但是可以根据自身情况来选择学习时间和学习方式,通过小组协作或独立学习发现困难和疑惑,然后在教师的帮助下解答讨论。尤其强调学生的学习能力及主动性,如果没有在课前完成教师的学习任务,课堂上的参与及讨论就是无本之木。对于大学生而言,自主学习的能力除了教师督促之外,更需要集体的学习氛围影响。这是一个系统的、长期的过程,虽然无法保证班级中每个同学的学习自觉性,但是毫无疑问但凡有学习意愿或者学习动机的同学都会在这种氛围中培养更好的自主学习能力。
三、听说翻转课堂教学设计
翻转课堂的模式虽然简单清楚,运用在听说课上也有不少优势,但是具体的设计和操作仍然很重要。笔者以《新视野大学英语视听说教程》(第三版)第二册第一单元为例,初步尝试了翻转课堂教学模式。
该教材每个单元一个主题,内容丰富,仅仅通过课堂教学根本无法满足。第一单元的教学目标有四个:(1)talk about learning experiences,(2)listen for signal words for listing,(3)give and respond to advice,(4)talk about learning/teaching methods。
教师在课前准备包括以下内容的导学视频:教师简单阐述本单元4个教学目标,插入乔布斯斯坦福大学演讲片段并向学生提出三个关于教学目标(1)learning experiences的思考题、TED演讲:如何高效学习(片段)提出三个关于教学目标(4)learning methods的思考题,最后介绍教学目标(3)give and respond to advice的相关表达方式。针对基础较好,学习能力较强的班级还可以布置课文中的五个短对话的练习并朗读对话文本。
在完成课前任务的过程中教师可通过QQ或者微信等通讯软件进行监控和沟通,例如让学生将文本朗读的语音或者思考结果发送在聊天群组里以此来抽查督促学生的课前学习。在课堂上首先快速检查学生练习任务完成情况,并答疑解惑。之后让学生分组,自由选择教学目标(1)或(4)的课前思考题作为主题,并运用课前视频中介绍的教学目标(3)的表达方式进行交流讨论,彼此提出自己的困惑并互相给出建议。然后每个组总结出好的学习建议或者方法来和大家分享。之后,教师带领学生一起完成教材中的重点习题,在此过程中指出教学目标(2)中的听力方法和技巧,捕捉重点词句和细节信息等。最后可将剩余练习作为课后任务布置给学生。
教师和学生在课前和课中需要完成的任务如下图所示:
笔者在进行以上的教学设计时考虑到以下几个原则:(1)导学视频短小精炼,目标明确,重点突出,素材新颖有趣,既能覆盖教学目标,又能引发学生思考;(2)听力输入与口语输出相结合,通过降低难度、提高兴趣等手段,引导学生针对导学视频中的内容进行独立思考、小组讨论、发言表达,从而实现对知识的内化、掌握;(3)以教学目标为指南,结合学生听说水平及学习兴趣,设计可最大程度调动学生参与的课堂活动;(4)做好教师角色转换,在学生课前与课中学习、交流的全过程中,教师分别担当设计者designer、监督者supervisor、指导者instructor的角色,协助学生有效完成学习目标。
通过以上翻转课堂和传统教学的实践对比,课前导学视频的输入给课堂上的师生、生生互动提供了基础。可以明显感受到学生的参与感更强,课堂氛围更好,既能建立实际会话情境,增加学生练习口语的机会,达到真正的交流和讨论,又能兼顾听力的训练。当然,针对不同水平的班级,课前任务和课堂活动的难度都需要调整,根据不同的课时长度,对教材的重点和难点也要有所取舍,一味地求多求广可能会起到相反的作用。
四、结语
综上所述,翻转课堂是一种新颖的教学模式。针对当前大学英语听说课的问题,它具有一些显著的教学优势。然而在实际操作中需要把握好教师角色的转变,以学生为中心不代表用课前任务取代教师讲授,仍然需要给予学生及时、有序的指导。从这个角度上来说,翻转课堂对教师素质从知识储备、教学能力、多媒体制作都有了更高的要求。合理有效地使用翻转课堂将有利于从根本上提高听说教学效果和学生的语言交际、应用能力。
摘要:“翻转课堂”是指将教师课堂授课,学生课下复习的传统模式“翻转”过来,学生在课前有目的的学习,结合教师课堂上个性化的教学活动。这种教学模式越来越受到我国教育界的重视。本文从当前大学英语听说课教学的现状入手,阐述了翻转课堂进入听说教学的优势,并给出了课堂实践案例及教学设计原则,以期对翻转课堂走入大学英语听说教学提供借鉴。
