On Monday, October 19, I went to the White House to attend the second White House Astronomy Night. Hundreds of students, teachers, astronomers, and scientists gathered on the South Lawn for this special event. The goal:To spark young people’s interest in STEM fields:science, technology, engineering, and math.
President Barack Obama kicked off the night.He made an inspiring opening speech. Then, visitors checked out hands-on activity stations set up on the White House grounds. It was fun to go from one to the next meeting people and trying new things. At one station, I put on a pair of threedimensional glasses called virtual reality goggles.They made it look like I was on Mars! When I looked up I saw stars, and when I looked down I saw a spacecraft.
At another station, I met Stephen Pompea, who showed me how to use a telescope to peer at the moon. I was able to spot craters ( 火山口) .Pompea explained how they got there. Then he changed the lens of the telescope so I could get an even closer look at the moon. Then he told me a lot about the sun, Mars and the Milky Way. Before I said goodbye, he gave me a souvenir — a Galileoscope. It s a small, hand- held telescope named after Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei.
One really exciting part of White House Astronomy Night was when I got to meet three astronauts: Robert L. Behnken, Douglas G. Hurley, and Sunita Williams. Sunita Williams holds the record for spacewalk time by a female astronaut:5 hours and 40 minutes! All three astronauts were so nice and fun to talk to.
White House Astronomy Night was so fun and educational. Schools and museums all over the United States celebrated astronomy night in their own way, too. I am so glad I was able to celebrate it at the White House! I was definitely inspired. Now, I m looking toward the sky in a whole new way.

The worlds most popular type of banana is facing a major health crisis. According to a new study, a disease caused by a powerful fungus (真菌) is killing the Cavendish banana, which accounts for 99% of the banana market around the globe. The disease, called Tropical Race 4 (TR4) , has affected banana crops in southeast Asia for decades. In recent years, it has spread to the Middle East and the African nation of Mozambique. Now experts fear the disease will show up in Latin America, where the majority of the worlds bananas are grown.
Once a banana plant is infected with TR4, it cannot get water and nutrients. TR4 lives in soil, and can easily end up on a persons boots. If the contaminated (污染) boots are then worn on a field where Cavendish bananas are grown, the disease could be transferred. “ Once a field has been contaminated with the disease, you cant grow Cavendish bananas there anymore, ”scientist Randy Ploetz says.
Cavendish bananas are produced in mass quantities and are popular among consumers.Ploetz says, “Consumers like the way Cavendish looks and tastes.”
But Cavendish is also particularly vulnerable to TR4. The banana is grown in what is called monocultures.“You see a big field of bananas and each one is genetically identical to its neighbor, ”Ploetz says.“And they are all uniformly susceptible to this disease. So once one plant gets infected, it just runs like wildfire throughout that entire plantation.”
Bananas have faced this kind of crisis before. In the mid-1900s, the most popular banana at the time was nearly wiped out by an earlier version of TR4.
One solution to address the problem, Ploetz says, is to try to develop new bananas that can resist TR4.“It really needs to be done, but we dont have it yet.”He notes that we still have time before we need to worry about the Cavendish banana disappearing.

Devices for playing music come and go—cassette tapes, MP3 players and CDs. But one system invented some 200 years ago lives on.
In the mountains of western Switzerland, one company still makes automatic music boxes for music lovers around the world. Reuge, the last major manufacturer of a traditional device, was founded in 1865 by watchmaker Charles Reuge.The company has survived the competition from thephonograph— as well as more recent inventions — to continue making music boxes in a small factory in Sainte-Croix.

Music boxes reached the height of their popularity in the second half of the 19th Century when they were a principal form of entertainment.More common nowadays are the musical jewellery boxes, perhaps with a ballet dancer spinning inside, given to children. But enthusiasm for the traditionally crafted machine endures.
“Music boxes are somehow quite fascinating, ”says Alison Biden, chairwoman of the Musical Box Society of Great Britain.“Theres something a bit magical about these bits and pieces of metal.For the people who get caught by it, that magic never leaves them.”
The company is also developing new ideas for the music box in order to modernise its image—from a box that plays the theme tunes from Mission Impossible, James Bond and The Godfather to a coffee machine that plays a melody while making coffee. But at the heart of each of these products is the same basic system of a rotating metal cylinder (圆筒) with pins (别针) .
Mr Piguet believes music boxes are still popular precisely of this reason — because they are so“completely disconnected with the means available today for producing music ”.“ It s charming in a world that evolves quickly — that invents, throws away — music boxes are always there, ”he says.“And they still have a lot of years ahead of them, I believe.”

第75题是关于how old特殊疑问句的回答,其实很简单,答语用年龄即可。可大部分学生只知道在原文中直接找答案,而忽略了原文中给的是间接答案(序数词),需要变序数词为基数词。可见,学生不善于动脑筋,灵活运用。

Once upon a time, there was a poor fisherman in a village near the sea. He always dreamed of having a lot of money. One day, he heard that a big ship with a lot of gold sunk in the nearby water. Because of this, for a long time he often went to the sea and hoped to find the gold.
One day, he was sitting on his boat daydreaming. He suddenly felt something heavy pulling (拉) on his fishing rod (钓竿). He thought that good luck had come to him, and he pulled hard at it. “Wow! A big, gold chain (金链子)!” He said happily when he saw the thing. He then began to pull at the gold chain to try to get it all into the boat, but there seemed to be no end to it. When he got the more gold chain, the more water came into his boat.
But, the fisherman did not know it. He began to dream of a big house, a big piece of land, buying horses and cows... He kept pulling in the chain though the boat kept sinking. At last, the boat went under the sea and the fisherman died (死).
