专家点评:引用文学大师的诗句作为开场白,与结束语首尾呼应,颇有感染力。东西方文化的融合表现得十分鲜明,意味深长,是篇优秀的演讲。crossing the sea good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.the title of my speech today is crossing the sea.an english poet by the name of rudyard kipling once wrote in his poem we and they: all the people like us are we and everyone else is they we live over the sea while they live over the way we eat pork and beef with cowhorn-handled knives they who gobble their rice off a leaf are horrified out of their lives.when these lines first caught my eyes, i was shocked-how could two peoples remain so isolated and ignorant of each other in the past? todays society, of course, is an entirely different picture.those people who used to eat with cowhorn-handled knives might be very skillful in using chopsticks, and those people who used to gobble their rice might be as well have taken to fish and chips.indeed, just take china as an example: our modern life has been influenced by western style of living in so many ways that its no longer surprising to see teenagers going crazy about rock-and-roll, whole families dining out at mcdonalds and even rather elderly people dressed in apple jeans.however, these are only some expressions of the cultural changes taking place in our society today.what is really going on is a subtle but significant restructuring of the nations mentality.just look around.it is therefore evident that we as descendants of an ancient eastern civilization are already living under strong inf1uence of the western culture.but it is not only in china that we find the incorporation of the two cultures.take the chinese acupuncture as another example: this traditional treatment of diseases is finally finding its way to the west and hence the underlying notion that illness is resulted from the imbalance between yin and yang within the body--an idea which would strike any westerner as incredible in the past!ladies and gentlemen, we live in a great epoch when the global integration of economy and the information revolution have brought cultures of the world closer than ever before.we live in a particular era when countries, east and west, find themselves in need of readjusting their traditional values.we live, at the same time, at a critical juncture of our evolution because such problems as ethnic conflicts and regional unrest are increasingly posing a threat to the peace and happiness of the whole human race.to cope with such an era and to embrace an even brighter therefore, it is our sacred responsibility to promote the cultural exchanges and hence the mutual understanding between china and the rest of the world.it is my happiest dream that the new generation of chinese will not only grow up drinking coca-cola and watching hollywood, but also be blessed with the far-reaching benefits of multiple cultures;benefits that our forefathers had never, ever dreamed of.to end my speech, i would like to quote rudyard kipling again: all the people like us are we and everyone else is they but once you cross over the sea you will end by looking on we as only a sort of they thank you.译文:穿越海洋

对它进行了科学的研究,创立了演讲学。演讲也是一种比较复杂的精神劳动,它不仅对演讲者的思想水平,文化修养,表达能力是一次全面的考察,也是对演讲者的心理和心理素质的一次严峻的考验。故大学生在进行一次英语演讲时,最重要的是注意如何培养良好的英语演讲心态和成功把握英语演讲过程。本论文为读者陈述了在演讲过程中因注意的问题,如何选好英语演讲的主题,和怎样做好演讲提纲。

作为一种普遍的社会现象的演讲,其本质上是人们在特定时境中,借助有声语言和态势语言等艺术手段来表达从现实生活中得来的真实情感,用以影响和感召听众的一种现实语言交际与信息交流的活动。故任毕明教授在其一书《演讲雄辩谈话术》中指出:“演讲是语言和动作配合表达的一种宣传品。”①

英语演讲也是如此。但不同的是,对外国人来说,他们的演讲如同中国人用中国话演讲,只不过是内容和风格不同。对中国人来说,我们的英语演讲却是用另外一种语言来表述同一内容的演讲。这在一定层次上便要求演讲者具有一定的语言水平和能力。但对一般大学生来说,还没有具备高级演讲水平的前提下,其组织语言和应用语言的能力也不足。故除却这些因素以外,要想成功完成一场精彩的英语演讲,笔者认为,大学生应该把握好两点:第一,要培养良好的演讲心态。第二,要把握英语演讲过程。

演讲是一种比较复杂的精神劳动,它不仅对演讲者的思想水平,文化修养,表达能力的一次严峻的考验。良好的心理素质不仅是顺利进行演讲的重要前提,也是取得理想效果的可靠保证。看那些优秀的演讲者无一例外都具有良好的心理素质。②

(一),保持良好的心理平衡状态。

站在演讲台,面对成百上千的观众,难免会有胆怯,羞涩,说话瞠目结舌等的心理反应,无论如何这些心理反应都不可被完全“克服”,而只能被控制,被削弱。最重要的是要用英语给中国人演讲。作为“当事人”,有恐惧胆怯的心理,完全正常。事实上,我们所知的任何一位出色的演讲家都是有过恐惧怯场的经历。就拿林肯来说,他的朋友霍恩登曾经这样描述林肯的早期演讲:“他起初好像不知所措,很吃力去使自己适合情境,在过滤和过敏的感觉下,挣扎了片刻,因而更使自己难堪了。这个时候,我是很同情他的。他开始讲话了,声音尖锐难听,古怪的姿势,黄皱的脸孔,一律的动作,好像一切都是和他为难的” ③

不可想象吧!曾经被称为美国最出色的演讲家,当年竟然是这副德性。还有美国的著名作家马克▪吐温初次演讲时,口中像塞满了棉花,脉搏跳动得像赛跑时一样。爱尔兰政治领袖波奈尔,初次演讲时由于紧张攥紧拳头,以致指甲划破手心而流血。

想想这些大演讲家,在初次演讲是都会有紧张不良的心理反应,何况是我们大学生呢。所以,在这个时候,一定要保持良好的心理平衡状态。

(二),当出现不良的心理反应时,要对自己做出适当短时间的调整。想办法为自己创造一个和谐的环境,使自己形成一个坦然的心态。不妨深度呼吸几次,放松肌肉,面带微笑地向下浏览听众,尽量使自己跳动的心平扶下来。若此时心还处于紧张急躁的状态时,可适当的先用英语给观众将一个无关主题的笑话。轻松的缓解一下周围的气氛。如胡适在一次演讲时,这样开头:“我今天不是来向诸君作报告的,我是来‘胡说’的,因为我姓胡。”话音刚落,观众大笑。胡适采用自我解嘲的方式,以诙谐幽默的自我介绍开始,缩短了与听众的距离,活跃了气氛。继而自己紧张的心情一下放松了不少。

(三),在演讲过程中,出现不良反应时,要给与自己短暂停留的时间来调整自己。

我们在上课时,不难发现,有些英语老师在讲课的过程中不时会忘了讲课内容,单词,或语法时,他们经常会给学生一两分时间自由看书,自己在调整一下,继续授课。笔者认为,演讲也已如此,当我们用英语给中国人做演讲时,在表达陈述某一现象,观念,或物质时,一下子忘了该用什么词来表达时,这时候演讲者往往会出现心理不安,急躁,胆怯,紧张等不良心理反应,进而在后面的演讲,吐字不清,声音发抖,全身因过度紧张而出汗不止。在这个时候,我们不防给自己,给听众一两分停留的时间,刻意的讲一些无关主题的话题,笑话或生活情趣。给自己留一席空隙来回想自己所忘记的内容。如著名演讲家,李燕杰,在某一次演讲会时,突然忘记了自己的演讲的内容,就巧妙的运用对联:一二三四五六七,ABCDEFG,横批——OK。全场观众一下爆笑,都在窃窃私语,他利用这一空隙回想演讲内容,居然一下子就想到了。产生了很好的效果,克服了自己当时紧张的状态。

也有的时候,在用英语表达不清楚时,可以换用另外一种表达方式表达。但要尽量做到简洁明了,当某一单词忘记时,可以用另一个单词代替。如:Let us start the campaign of creating a mutually beneficial relationship between people and nature right from this moment.演讲者忘了此句话,或忘了该如何表达时,不妨用另一段语言来表达,如:Let us take some measures to develop the relationship of people and nature.①

有了良好的心理状态,那么一场完美的演讲就等于成功了一半,剩下的那一半就是要把握好英语演讲的过程。

用英语给中国人演讲与用汉语给中国人演讲的不用之处是,英语作为非本国语言,在说的过程中,听众是否对你的内容听懂,理解,感触多少是演讲者所必须把握的。这就要求演讲者必须把握好英语演讲的过程。

(一),演讲者要确定一个合适的主题。主题决定演讲思想性的强弱,制约材料的取舍,影响到论证方式和艺术调度②

没有明确的主题,演讲就如同没有灵魂的偶像。即使讲的天花乱坠,也会让人不知所云不得要领。对一般大学生来说,英语演讲其目的在于宣传,教育,组织和激励群众。因此选题要有时代意义,必须紧紧抓住人们普遍关心的问题,抓住社会现实中继续解决的问题。例如,第一届“21世纪杯”全国英语演讲比赛冠军刘欣在1996年5月17日,伦敦居心的国际英语演讲比赛中,就以显示生活中的自己为例子,进而讲到现在的中国妇女发生了翻天覆地的变化为主题,赢得了评委的好评。

(二),在英语内容结构上,要有清晰的思路和简要的提纲。

理清思路是演讲者对自己的思维的梳理和整顿,涉及对主题的深化,材料的剪裁和组织,结构的安排等③

英语演讲的内容要简单明了,使听众有种豁然开朗的感觉,毕竟不同于汉语演讲,能表达的委婉含蓄一些,听众也会明白。但英语演讲就不同,有些听众的英语水平高,有些低,对层次不同的人来说,在听的过程中,感知的深度就不同。故演讲者一定要有清晰的思路,面面到点,层次分明。

史迪芬·E·卢卡斯在其一书中指出:“提纲之于一篇讲话,犹如蓝图之于一所房子,一篇好的,清楚的提纲会在你演讲之前帮助你发现错误,弱点和多余的信息.正如建筑师或工程师在开始建造房子之前努力审查图纸常常可以减少重大的错误一样.”①

劳伦斯认为,一个演讲者最糟糕的是:“在站起来之前,不知道姚说些什么,演说的时候,不记得曾经说过什么.”②

在英语演讲的过程中,难免会有些东西混乱,如果演讲者自己也都不知道整个演讲的过程,何况是下面的听众.故须拟定一份属于自己合理的提纲.对于一般的英语演讲来说,提纲的类型大体可以分为⑴标题提纲.就是在演讲大标题之下,将若干个小标题列出来,构成这种提纲,可以用一个简单的英语词,词组等罗列,达到一目了然的目的.⑵句子完整的提纲.用英语短语表达最好.⑶关键词语式提纲.这是缩写的标题式提纲,以英语中的关键词语的形式表达出来,从而达到简洁一致,层次分明的目的.

最后,我想对英语演讲者想说的是,一定要注意自己的口语表达.因为演讲是一种口语表达的活动.对个人来说,不同的人有不同的感觉,从普遍来讲,英语演讲做到:通俗明快,朴实自己的口语表情达意,就好在表达的过程中,一定要声音洪亮,口齿分明,发音标准.单词之间,句子之间要有停顿,下面的听众才会有时间反映,理解你所说的内容.看那些外国人演讲时单词的发音特别准确,清晰,易懂.所以说这一点很重要.

英语演讲页不外乎于汉语演讲,只要做到以上这几点,那么完成一场精彩漂亮的演讲是很容易的.
