一、正误判断法
阅读测试的正误测试法的特点,一是设计容易、迅速,二是可以使受测者将注意力放在阅读材料的突出语言难点上,三是能快速地检查了解受测者对阅读材料信息要点掌握的情况,使教师能把更多的时间投入到教学的其它环节上。由于有这些优点,正误测试法较适合用在有限的课堂时间里作为阅读教学课堂进步测试,尤其适用于测试对阅读材料中某些片断的理解。但由于正误判断形式测试只有两种选择,受测者就有了50%的机会给各题提供正确答案,因此,可能会使受测者在时间有限的情况下,不是去做更多的思考,而是仅凭猜测去选择正确答案。正误测试题的这种选择正确答案的偶然性是其最大的缺点,也因此会降低正误判断测试法的可靠性,这是测试设计者在设计阅读正误判断题时必须考虑的问题。要使正误测试能客观准确地反映受测者的阅读能力,设计者在设计测试题时必须提供足够数量的试题。按新大纲70wpm的阅读速度要求,如果要评估受测者在10分钟的阅读时间里对一篇约500个词的文章的理解情况,所设计的测试题的数量最好达到八至十个。这样,就能将受测者拉开档次,提高测试的可靠性。此外,还应注意做到所设计的问题尽可能的简洁、清楚,容易让受测者完全理解。
二、多项选题法
阅读测试多项选题测试法是目前使用最广泛的阅读测试方法,多用于评估中、高级阶段的阅读能力。在中、高级阅读教学阶段,不仅要求受测者理解阅读材料的突出信息点和一些重要片断的字面意思,而且要求受测者能够透过繁多的表层事实去理解文章的深刻复杂的思想和文章的主题。这类阅读材料往往涉及一系列事件,事实集中,观点不同,态度各异。评估受测者对这类材料的阅读能力,多选题测试方法更加有效。要让测试客观、准确地评估受测者理解、推理、归纳、总结的能力,测试设计者应重视测试材料的采样和测试题的内容设计。采样时一要考虑材料的内容和体裁,二要注意材料的长度。理想的测试材料在内容和体裁上或者应当类似于受测者曾在教科书和学校作业中遇到过的那种材料,或者应该涉及受测者在以后的现实生活中所要从事的那种阅读任务。如果测试设计者忽略了选材的适用性,就可能降低测试的可靠性。因为对部分受测者来说,在阅读测试中没有取得理想的成绩,并不是由于语言能力的原因妨碍了对文章的正确理解,而是材料所涉及的内容大大地超过了他们所拥有的专业知识和常识。反之,一个阅读能力一般的受测者,也可能因为材料的内容适合其专业知识和常识的水平而获得高分。一篇阅读测试材料的合适长度约为400—600个词。过长或过短都不能拉开受测者的档次。要说明的是,这里举的数字不是绝对的,因为选文的长度也应当与其难度相关。例如,一篇特别难或特别复杂的选文就可以比一篇简单的选文短些。通过对一些阅读测试结果的分析我们发现,受测者有时无需完全理解测试材料中的信息就能选对答案;有时虽然完全理解了材料中的信息却作出了错误的选择。这些现象提醒试题设计者,多选题的每个正确答案都必须建立在受测者正确理解测试材料的基础上,而不是依靠他的一般知识或专业知识甚至智力,而且所有的供选答案都必须在语法上是正确的。
三、填空法
阅读测试填空测试法也是较为多见的一种阅读测试手段。目前大多数的填空阅读测试都以多选题形式给受测者提供选择项。但为数不少的教科书在设计这类测试练习时,只是删除一些词,并不提供选择项。填空测试法要求受测者利用上下文中所有能够找得到的提示,进行最可行的替代,以解开“被中断的”或“残缺不全的”文章“密码”。受测者要在全面理解材料内容的基础上才有可能解开“密码”,因此,它能较客观全面地评估出受测者的阅读能力。同多选题法阅读测试一样,设计填空法测试题时也要注意选材的合适性。要避免选文有太多的事实或讲的是一个特殊的主题,否则可能只对具有某种特殊专业知识的受测者有利,让有些受测者不必对材料有深入的理解就能根据文章的背景知识进行填空或作出正确的选择。还应注意的是,试题设计者对材料中的词语作删略时,不要以固定词语或习语作测试项,也应避免出现对选择项受测者只需根据语法法则就能作出正确判断的情况。否则,填空阅读测试在一定程度上会变成一种对受测者词汇能力和语法知识的测试,因而降低了填空法评估阅读能力的可靠性。
四、翻译法
阅读测试近年来为了避免受测者乱猜答案,使阅读测试能更可靠有效地反映受测者的阅读能力,提高测试信度,出现了翻译法。其形式是提供一篇400字左右的文章,要求受测者在规定的时间内读完全文并将文中划线句子译成中文。按新大纲读、听、说、写、译的排序,是将译归入外语应用能力的范畴。但目的语是英文还是中文,或者是二者兼顾,未见大纲作明确说明。在近几年全国大学英语四级考试的试卷中,短文阅读翻译数次取代了阅读填空。从这一现象来看,显然译和测试阅读能力有很大关系,也就是说通过翻译来测试受测者语言的输入能力。对大纲所要求的‘译’的属性,限于篇幅,这里不作讨论。本文只想谈谈利用翻译法测试阅读能力要注意的一些问题。不可否认,翻译法对了解受测者的阅读能力有一定的效果,但这种了解在很大程度上只是表面的,并且在许多情况下只对部分学生有效。特别是翻译法阅读测试只要求受测者对选文中的部分句子翻译,部分受测者可能因为自己具有的知识和生活体验而“幸运”地正确理解它们意思。再者,受测者可能会正确理解文中某个句子或片断的意思,但对它的含义或在表达文章的主题上所起的作用也许并不理解。更有甚者,有些受测者可能无需通篇阅读选文也能够准确地译出划线部分的意思。此外,有些受测者因母语文字表达能力较差,虽然正确理解了测试项,但却不能完全准确地表达出对它的理解。因此,可以这么认为,翻译法阅读测试较适合中低级阶段的阅读测试,对高级阶段的阅读能力测试它有较大的局限性,不能客观地反映出受测者的阅读能力。
阅读测试设计具有很强的科学性和艺术性。如何才能客观地、全面有效地达到测试目的,是一个值得阅读测试设计者深入研究的课题。每种测试方法都有它自己的优点,也有其局限性。在实践中我们应该不拘一格,对各种方法取长补短,灵活应用,结合使用,这样才能客观可靠地了解受测者的阅读能力,提高阅读教学质量。

语言测试的目的是通过测试, 对被试的语言能力做出准确、公正的测量。大学英语教学在国家相关部门、学校及教师等的共同努力下取得了巨大的进步, 学生逐渐具备了较强的阅读和听说能力,部分学生能够用英语进行交流。然而,绝大多数学生的实际语言能力与教学大纲所要求的目标仍有一定差距,尤其是口语能力十分薄弱。很多用人单位和机构反馈,即使是通过了大学英语四六级考试的学生, 在实践中也很难驾轻就熟地使用这种语言。诸多学者对此现象进行了或深或浅的研究,有人将这一现象归因于四六级考试制度的不完善,导致应试教学,忽视应用能力培养(刘润清,2000);有学者认为四六级考试题型误导学生偏重语言知识等陈述性知识学习,忽视应用技能等程序性知识学习(李绍山,2005)。针对当前大学生英语口语能力薄弱的问题,很多学者从教学大纲、课程设置、教学策略和测试方面进行了探讨。笔者将从大学英语校内口语测试这一角度入手,从理论和实践方面进行阐述,旨在抛砖引玉,对大学英语教学及测试提出建议。
二、口语测试现状
在1979年举行的第一次语言测试研究研讨会上,Canale和Swain(1980)便在大会上提出了“交际语言能力的理论模式”,对外语教学与测试研究产生了深远影响。在此基础上,Bachman(1996) 认为交际语言能力是把语言知识和语言使用的场景特征结合起来,创造并解释意义的能力。语言起源于口语,口语是满足社会学院片刻不可缺少的,对口语能力的测试,实际上就是对语言实际运用能力即交际能力的测试,因此,口试的重要性不言而喻。当前,我国最大最完整的口语测试形式之一就是大学英语四六级考试口语考试 (以下简称CET-SET),其效度和信度得到了广泛验证,既考查了语言能力,又考查了交际能力。
然而,结合实际教学,笔者发现对CET-SET知晓的学生人数众多,而能够参加的学生则很少,绝大多数学生学习英语的目的只是通过四级或六级的笔试,对于口试则从未设想过。此外,受技术水平不尽完善、考生数量众多、人工评分费时等方面条件的制约,CET-SET的发展遇到了瓶颈期,对教师教学和学生学习发挥的正向反拨作用较小。
Huges(1989)指出教学与测试直接是伙伴关系 ,测试应该支持“好”的教学,纠正“不好”的教学。语言教学与语言测试中,教学是第一位的,测试是为教学服务的,但是测试对教学有极强的“指挥棒”作用。在我国大学英语教学与测试中,鲜有学校会进行校内口语测试, 这就使得教师的教学愈来愈具有鲜明的应试教学色彩, 绝大多数教师和学生都以四六级考试为指引,大学英语课本内容愈来愈和四六级考试题型接近。学生在英语学习方面更重视语言知识和结构的学习,如:短语、句型、语法等,而忽视口语的练习,长此以往,学生在语言的实际运用方面的能力就显得愈发薄弱,缺乏足够的交际能力。
三、校内口试体系
1.校内口试的必要性
由于大学英语学习者只有符合相应的报考条件才能参加CET-SET,绝大多数学生的分数达不到参加口试的分数线 ,因此,非考生学习者是CET-SET的不完全参与者。对这些学生而言,他们缺乏练习英语口语的机会,同时对英语口语的重视程度不够。因此,在校内考试中加入口语考试是十分必要的。
测试这一“指挥棒”对教师教学和学生学习都具有很强的反拨作用。所谓反拨作用(washback),是指语言测试对教学和学习产生的影响(Huges,1989),这种作用可以是积极的,也可以是消极的。虽然测试对教学与学习的影响可能存在的程度有差异,但是反拨作用的存在是不置可否的。为了提高学生对英语口语和交际能力的重视度, 使所有学生都成为口试的完全参与者,促进学生英语能力的全面提高,将口试这一模式加入到校内测试中是十分必要的。
2.校内口试的测试方式
我国绝大多数高校将大学英语设置为大学一、二年级的必修课,因此,按照循序渐进的方式,在四个学期的期末考试中可加入口试环节。在测试题目的设计方面,应该根据学生的能力,第一学期由于学生刚刚接触大学英语,因此,可将口试的重点放在语音语调方面,对题目的设计可以采用单词、单句和段落朗读或跟读的方式,通过检测学生语音、语调、连续、停顿、意群等,夯实学生的基本功。第二学期,由于学生已经具备了英语的相关基础知识,因此,口试题目可以包含段落朗读、有引导的话题展开、看图说话、视频重复等,以此考查学生连续讲英语的能力,检验学生是否具有一定的外语思维能力。第一学年的考试建议采用单人测试的方式, 考试时间控制在510分钟。出题人在设计第三学期口试题目时 ,可以将有引导或给予词汇、句型提示的话题辩论加入其中,将学生分组,检验学生能否运用外语思维,能否用英语初步论证个人观点。第四学期,建议使用自由辩论的方式对学生进行口语测试,因为在之前的学习基础上, 学生已经具备了自主学习和自主练习口语的能力,了解了口语基础知识和技能,表达思想的能力得以提高,语境适应性有所增强。因此,给学生尽可能提供真实的交际环境是十分必要的, 这也符合语言测试的真实性原则和一致性原则。
3.校内口试的评估方式
由于各个学期口试的测试方式、内容都有差异,因此,对口试的评估方式也应该有所侧重,评估方式有共性也有差异。
3.1评估方式的共性
对四个学期的口试评分进行分档,体现学生的水平差别,例如:第一学期可将对语音的评估分为三个等级,包含三个分数段,最高的分数段表示语音清晰,朗读熟练流利,读错单词数少, 最低分数段则为学生语音欠清晰准确, 朗读不流利熟练,读错单词数量多,第二个分数段的学生语音较清晰、朗读较流利熟练。此外,对测试的时间进行统一要求,例如:第一二学期均可将口试时间定在五分钟, 第三四学期则可将设定一个时间区间。
3.2评估方式的区别
大学英语学习的基础阶段, 口试的重点为语音语调等基础知识,对受试表现的评估强调的是准确性、流畅性,而到第三四学期,对受试表现的评估更侧重于话语的长短、连续性、灵活性和适切性,其中适切性最重要,因为口试主要考查受试的交际能力, 在设定题目时应尽可能将受试置身于真实的交际情境中,真实的交际语境涉及的因素较为复杂,所以,对受试表现的评估方式应该更加细化。
四、校内口试的反拨作用
语言教学和语言测试中,教学是第一性的,测试是为教学服务的,科学的测试能够推动教学朝着正确的方向发展。为了充分发挥正向的反拨效用, 教师及教学管理者可以有意识地发挥测试的积极导向作用,纠正教学中的错误做法。比如:为了应对四六级考试, 教师在日常教学中会有意无意强化英语语法、阅读理解等方面知识的灌输,忽视了培养学生的语言应用能力,尤其是在真实交互语境下用英语进行交流的能力。再加上绝大多数高校在校内考试中都不涉及口试, 这无形中更加剧了教师对口语能力培养的忽视。通过增加口试,教师就可以在教学中强化口语练习, 逐渐培养学生使用英语进行交流的能力。在校大学生多数以通过四六级考试为目标,沉浸于各种四六级模拟试题中,疯狂地练习英语阅读等多项选择题。这使得学生这一英语学习的主题对英语口语的重视不够, 久而久之,“哑巴英语”的学习方法越来越根深蒂固。如果能够在校内考试中加入口试部分,就会引导学生进行自主的口语练习,逐渐提高口语交际能力。
五、结语
虽然学界和教学一线都对语言是交际的工具这一命 题达成了广泛共识, 但是在测试实践中并未很好地体现出来,在各个类型、规模的语言测试中,离散的、客观的、间接的识辨型题型仍占主体。目前对校内测试尤其是口语测试进行的研究有限,但其对整个大学本科阶段的教和学都起到不可低估的反拨作用和强化作用,因此理应受到重视。只有在理论和实践两方面同时加强对校内口试的研究和探索, 才会不断促进我国大学英语教学水平的提高, 提高大学生的英语交际能力。
摘要:大学英语校内考试不含口试部分,再加上大学英语四六级考试中口语考试的覆盖范围有限,所以学生对英语口语缺乏重视,这就使得学生的英语交际能力较弱。本文通过阐述大学英语口语测试的现状,分析了在校内考试中加入口试的必要性,举例说明了口试的测试方式和评估方式,并从反拨作用的角度,对今后大学英语教学提出了建议。
