As the dean and professor of the department, I am quite willing to recommend to you my student, Mr.Purcell, to study advertisement in your postgraduate school.

He was admitted into the law school of our university to study international laws in with excellent scored, and was in the same class with my daughter. 推荐人：三个。在推荐人的选择问题上，美国大学对于以下三个老师的推荐信基本是不会错过的，它们分别是counselor、文科老师和理科老师。

Counselor：要知道counselor是指的哪个老师首先要知道美国高中的一个特点，美国的高中学生都有一个自己的counselor，这个counselor会指导学生的升学问题，所以翻译过来可以是升学指导顾问。在中国的普通高中里是没有这个角色的，所以学生们可以选择自己的班主任来写自己的counselor的推荐信。对于选择谁为自己写counselor的推荐信，由学生自己来决定，比如班主任、校长、年级主任都可以，但是原则就是要对自己各个方面比较熟悉。需要注意的是，在中国的少数国际高中是有自己的counselor的，所以事情就好办多了，直接请自己的counselor来写作就好。

文科和理科老师：从自己的任课老师中选择对自己比较熟悉的老师就可以了。

PS的整体构思是非常重要，又是非常微妙的。我感觉通常PS分为两种风格，一种是专业型的，也就是非常明确的描绘自己的科研爱好以及对未来研究的构想，这多见于研究经历丰富的申请人的PS，另一种就是普适性的，也就是注重通过描写个人的能力、经历来说明自己的可塑性，这种风格的多见于一些研究经历较少的本科生，比如我。但总的来说，一个好的PS总是围绕着说明你过往是一支“绩优股”，未来是一支“潜力股”，这样才能说服学校在你身上进行投资。

在我看过的很多PS中，相当一部分长篇累牍的描述申请人怎样的优秀，但是并没有更深进的写出为什么优秀。那些具有说服力的PS往往是写出了那些成就了你优秀的经历。追求语句上的华丽实在是没有什么意义的，实实在在的内容才是PS成功的关键。过多的溢美之词会让人感觉浮华，但缺乏说服力。因此在几次修改中，我删掉了很多诸如outstanding，excellent之类的形容词。往掉那些空洞的描写自己优良品质的话语，代之以实实在在的例子，使得一篇PS 更加饱满。比如我通过帮助量子力学老师完成一本习题解答的事情，很轻易就说明了：

每个人都有这样的类似的经历，只要能够恰当的表达出来，就是一篇好的PS。

PS的修改就像是在淘金，只有反复不断的提炼，最后剩下的才是真正的“金子”。在修改PS的那些日子，我几乎到了夜不能寐的程度。经常是半夜两三点还在琢磨。幸好我在美国读书的同学和在北京的很多朋友给了我很多灵感，比如一开始，我和众多新手一样，句句都是自己如何的好，一个在美国的同学看了迅速指出PS 应当写一些自己的挫折，以反衬自己的一日千里，有对比才更能体现我的能力。另外尽管PS中可以以小标题来分割不同的内容，但多增加了一些过渡性的句子可以使得PS的连贯性大大改进，让人读起来有一气呵成的感觉。由于GRE阅读的影响，很多中国学生喜欢使用结构复杂的长句，时不时还扔两个GRE词汇，但据我美国的同学说，教授普遍喜欢看简洁明快的PS，他们审材料的时候天天都要阅读几十份，复杂的句子除了让他们头疼，反感就没什么作用了。所以经过多次修改，我的PS最后基本不出现超过两行的句子。

写PS的时候，还可以参考一些名人的传记，有些牛人的传记写的非常有特点，生动，给了我很大的启发。我个人是非常崇拜Landau的，因此看过一些Landau的英文传记，参考了很多里面的写作手法。

在写PS的同时，我还在预备11月份的物理SUB考试，尽管SUB成绩在申请中所占比例并不是很大，但是一个好的SUB成绩还是可以大大鼓舞士气的。物理 SUB考试关键不在于题目有多难，而是如何在规定时间内做完这些题目。迅速、正确的理解题意是在SUB考试中取得好成绩的宝贝。题目本身的难度对于大多数中国学生来说都是很低的，最难的题目也不会超出普通物理的范围，加上本来都是选择题，没有复杂的计算，因此只要题目意思理解的正确，都能够很快做出结果。

主题确定了，细节想好了，结构和大纲自然就出来了。这主要想说一下开头和结尾。开头千万不要写我是谁谁，来自哪，想申请贵校什么专业。这样的开头方式太过于开门见山，无任何特色可言。有特色的开头是成功的一半，能让读者有继续看下去的念头。制造一个悬念，创造一个情境等等，都是不错的开头方式。结尾部分也很重要，材料审核者今天心情不好，可能不看你中间部分的内容，但肯定也会看你开头和结尾部分，所以一个好文章，不仅要有吸引人的开头，也要一个给人留下印象深刻的结尾。

提纲是初稿的根据，往提纲里头加入细节和内容，初稿就出来了。初稿完成以后，先休息两天，过两天再回头看看你写的文章，再回归到最原始的问题。
