The American dream is the concept widely held in the U-nited States of America, which through hard work, courage and determination one can achieve prosperity (often associated with the Protestant work ethic) .In the United States'Declaration o Independence the founding father stated:"eld certain truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are life, liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness."This sentiment was considered the foundation of the American Dream.

In fact, as one of the most significant characteristics, the American dream is the implied freedom that exists in America fo any individual to pursue their personal dreams and the persona opportunity (but not a government guarantee) to accomplish whatever it is that they desire to accomplish.

In this book, I am greatly impressed by the characters strength, talents, decision and determination of realizing thei dreams, which can be different from many other"American dreams".And following is the analysis and recept of mine to wards this.

2 The Unique American Dream of the Mafia Family in th USA of The Godfather and the ways of Realizing it

2.1 The godfather—Don Vito Corleone and his"American dream"

Don Vito Corleone, who had been born Vito Andolini, had been sent to America at his twelve, because his father's killing of the local Mafia chief in Sicily, Italy.

From 15th century, the south part of Italy had been lagged behind, which caused serious social crisises:the splittism bred;poverty and backward turned into the root of violence and crime;drugs selling, murder and robbery indulged in willful persecution…Before the First World War, the happening percent of murder in some area of Sicily was about 30 times higher than that of other provinces in the North. (qtd.in Chen et at.229) In this situation, the Italian government paid much attention to Sicily.While they found at last that it is useless to keep the order and manage the public security there with police.The violence was not able controlled at all.In such a society, more and more young people without job walked up to the way of committing crimes.

In Sicily, at the turn of the century the Mafia was the second government, far more powerful than the official one in Rome.So it's easily to understand that the Mafia could never wait for small Vito growing up to revenge them, their cruelty let them kill a child with no hesitance.Lucky Vito then be sent to America by his kind relatives, and seized his dream there.This unusual background brought the foreshadowing to him that in decades later he would be unusual.

The process of Don Vito Corleone became the godfather is just the course he realized his dream—his unique American dream.Here, let me put it briefly that the godfather's dream is just to rebuild the Corleone family and their old Sicily traditions in the land of America, and keep to revive them, which in some degree relates to the consciousness of seeking for one's"root".By resorting to violence and gaining the friendship of others, he wants to achieve his success—be an authority, or a leader who can bring his people wealth and happiness.

As an immigrant, he soon took root in the broad new land, bringing his ingrained Sicily traditions with him.He married a Sicily girl, worked for the Sicily boss, and made friends with Sicily people…He lived a quiet, plain and poor life, while he was happy, for he at first really was not as ambitious as many other immigration.He had lost his former family, so he would tried his best to maintain his new family, to develop it in this much free society, and to pass on the old Sicily traditions continuously.

While then from an experience came his oft-repeated belie that every man has but one destiny.In his neighborhood there was a man called Fanucci.Just because of him, young Vito lost his job, and he felt a cold anger for the dreaded Fanucci.He never showed this anger in any way but bided this time.By accident Vito made the acquaintance with two tough guys:Pete Clemenza and Tessio.Under the great pressure of family support he joined them to do some illegal things.For growing up in the Sicily society and living in the neighborhood full of crimes, his choice seems reasonable.Saw these young guys gained more and more money, Fanucci stretched his hand to them, demanding fo part of the loot.Facing him, Vito showed no anger or refusal, he acted perfectly and tactically.How did this young man act so tactfully and calmly?We can see that his father's death shadowed something to this:be hot-tempered, rash and calmless, one easily makes mistake and be defeated;while be self-possessed courageous, careful and resourceful, one would be sure of success.Vito was just the latter one.With his wit, he realized tha Fanucci was not so powerful, he said to his two partners:"I'l reason with him."It was to become a famous phrase in the years to come.It was to become the warning rattle before a deadly strike (Puzo, The Godfather 274) .

Years of quiet observation had convinced him that he had more courage than other man.Vito didn't hesitate too much, he soon took his step—to kill Fanucci.It was a heart quake process He expressed no panic and fright, and took three shots, destroyed the evidence calmly and carefully, at last came back home to join his wife and children and neighbors in front of the tenement.No one taught him how to do this, Vito really has the makings of be the godfather.He became the hero, and people all respected even awed him.

3 The features of the unique American Dream o the Mafia family

By introducing and describing the former American dreams of the two leading characters, we may find that there are some features of them, which are very particular.

Firstly, the dream is not a typical American one, but concerning to the Sicily traditions.The Mafia families, coming to the broad land of America from their ancient hometown of Sicily, are always clannish and unitive in their own groups.When seeking for their success in this numerous and complicated society, every family solidarizes their family members, and many times, differen families may unite together to enhance their development in the society.They keep to their traditions and don't want to have many changes;they always keep in their mind that they born the blood of Sicily;they have great pride and dignity that can not be offended…

Secondly, the way of achieving this unique American dream is quite different from others—resorting to the crime and violence.The Mafia has a long history and developing process.As the underground criminal power, it carries through illegal activities;assembles illicit money;colludes with the political dignitary;controls and uses the tool of vox populi…It has rigorous organization which containing the leader, the Caporegime, the lawyer, the corps, the intelligence agent, killers and so on.In order to achieve the success, the Mafia resorts to the violence at all costs:murdering, assassinating, kidnapping, or many other horrified means.In the road of realizing the dream, there is blood and tears.It should pay this cost, for losers are always in the wrong.

Lastly, this kind of American dream has taken root in the American society, and has influenced it in some degrees.When the Sicily Mafias came to America, getting more chances and opportunities, in this much free society, the Mafias just like the dieing fish drop into water, developed quickly.They expanded their underground world rampantly beneath the government controlling.Soon they took root in the land and established their status and orbit there.The government could not easily control these groups, for it had been penetrated by them.The Mafia families had their hands holding many parts of the society:the economy area;the political terrain;the entertainment scope etc.The whole society had been changed by them more or less.

These features show why this kind of American dream should be called unique.

4 Conclusion

In the American, people pursue their diverse dreams in their various ways.The American dream, as its wild spread influence and representation, has been one word written in the human history.

All the challenges the godfather family met are the antagonism and compromise

of the ancient traditions and the modern world.At the same time of changing and sacrificing, the leader of the family always keeps to maintain the traditions at all his best.It seems that the act of maintaining the traditions itself should not be worried about the validity of its origin.And the act always does not lack the motivation, for the tradition is just a miserable thing existing in one's life which does not work in a rational and logical way.The tradition itself is just like the No.1 motivation, if one believes it, he would obtain strength and courage from it.Contrariwise, on this base, the tradition itself being protected becomes a powerful thing, and is interdependent with the men maintaining it.Upon this meaning, the godfather is called the man of the time.

一、引言

高职服装英语是涵盖服装设计、服装史论、服装工程、服装文化和服装贸易专业知识的专业英语学科，其中服装设计的西方理念和实施又属该课程学习内容的重中之重。单一静态的课本知识不足以调动基础差的高职生学习热情，也不利于学生将服装专业英语知识转化成观察和了解欧美时尚时装的审美能力和判断力。因此教师为学生提供一档合适的英文双语服装设计类节目是有着极为迫切和必要的。如何利用体现西方服装设计理念的英文原声设计类节目贴近高职生的服装英语学习，值得从事本门课程教学的教师们的关注。在当代大学英语教学提倡融入英语原声双语影视节目成为普遍热潮的大形势下，关于在高职服装英语教学中引入设计类欧美原声节目的必要性、可行性及实施策略的见解少有见文。以美国原声版知名时装设计类真人秀节目《天桥风云》为补充性教学辅助素材，以节目题目“天桥风云”和“教学”或“英语”为主题词，在被中国学术期刊界、教育界、出版界、图书情报界等社会各界赋予盛誉的中国知网CNKI（China National Knowledge Infrastructure）上进行跨库检索，截至本文撰稿成文日期2016年7月17日跨库检索查询到的期刊论文为零，同期仅能查询到一篇发表与2013年题为“中美时尚文化对比研究——以《创意星空》和《天桥风云》为例”的硕士论文且不是关于服装英语教学的研究。可知关于在高职服装英语课中，用该档英文赛事节目作为教学有益补充的研究是个全新的探索，期待本文为本门课程带来抛砖引玉的新见解新成效。

二、在服装英语课内引入美国《天桥风云》视听教学的必要性

（一）节目介绍

要认识到风靡全球的设计师选秀节目美国《天桥风云》对高职服装英语课的必要辅助意义，需要先了解该节目的实力出场团队，节目构成及赛项看点。本文提及的《天桥风云》不是拍摄于1997年共36集，由韩国张东健、金南珠、韩载硕等主演、披露韩国时装界耀眼吸引的风光背后那些让人艳羡的模特行业现实生活的韩国言情、都市、偶像剧《天桥风云》，而是由Bravo Cable公司发行、由Eli Holzman主创、海蒂·克鲁姆 Eli Holzman编剧，于2004年12月1日在美国首播的一档时装设计师展示才华的英文原声真人秀节目。其英文名称是《Project Runway》，因受著名韩剧《天桥风云》影响，“天桥风云”成为其节目众多版本译制名中最受国人欢迎一名。

服装的款式千变万化，新技术、新材料、新工艺不断涌现，使得服装专业英语教材的编写很难跟上这个行业的发展步伐。但如果因此就不主动靠近服装生产行业，则势必会造成教学内容的陈旧，使得学生学无所用[2]。时尚从诞生之日起就与传媒紧密联系在一起，在信息化时代，电视媒体对时尚文化的传播有着越来越重要的作用，通过电视媒体我们可以了解到一个社会在特定时期内的服饰文化，服饰心理，设计语言，审美倾向以及服装产业发展特征等各方面[3]。美国《天桥风云》原声节目展示了欧美国家对一流服装设计师在能力素质上的基本要求，体现了服装美学、服装心理学及市场商业需求，反映了服饰文化变迁及服装产业发展阶段的差异。

三、在服装英语课内引入《天桥风云》视听教学的可行性

依据有三。关于在高职英语中引入影视教学的文章为该创新性细化教学提供了理论依据；不少艺术类高职院校文化课授课模式为连续90分钟，其后期20分钟需要有实践性视听节目调节学生注意力并转化课本理论；以湖南省为例，全省高职院校均加入了世界大学城职教新干线网络，高职教师利用“永不下课”的网络课堂为学生课后的观后思考讨论提供了互动性平台。

I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school.

And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it’s your first day in a new school, so it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous.

I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now -- (applause) -- with just one more year to go.

And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little bit longer this morning.

I know that feeling.

When I was young, my family lived overseas.

I lived in Indonesia for a few years.

And my mother, she didn’t have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with an American education.

So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday.

But because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the morning.

I’ve talked about teachers’ responsibility for inspiring students and pushing you to learn.

I’ve talked about your parents’ responsibility for making sure you stay on track, and you get your homework done, and don’t spend every waking hour in front of the TV or with the Xbox.

I’ve talked a lot about your government’s responsibility for setting high standards, and supporting teachers and principals, and turning around schools that aren’t working, where students aren’t getting the opportunities that they deserve.

But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, the best schools in the world -- and none of it will make a difference, none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities, unless you show up to those schools, unless you pay attention to those teachers, unless you listen to your parents and grandparents and other adults and put in the hard work it takes to succeed.

That’s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education.

Maybe you could be an innovator or an inventor -- maybe even good enough to come up with the next iPhone or the new medicine or vaccine -- but you might not know it until you do your project for your science class.

Maybe you could be a mayor or a senator or a Supreme Court justice -- but you might not know that until you join student government or the debate team.

You’ve got to train for it and work for it and learn for it.

2.1 Definition

As one of the most important roots of American culture,Puritanism was originated from a religious reform movement in the late 16th and 17th centuries that sought to"purify"the Church of England of remnants of the Roman Catholic"Popery".According to Encyclopedia Britain 2005,it was described as follows:

Covenant Theology,also called Federal Theology,was regarded as the base of Puritanism."According to covenant theology,there is a covenant,between God and man,namely,the Covenant of Grace,which is made of man's own accord.Man gets the grace of God by this covenant,and all of man's deeds and thoughts exist for that grace."[13]64And the core of Puritan Covenant lies on the Covenants of Grace,the Covenant of Society and the Covenant of Church.

Those puritans,arriving at North America,inherited and developed Covenant Theology of Puritanism,confirming Covenant Thought and its related rights;so to speak,the establishment of the church or government was agreed by the governed.In the"Mayflower Convention",the Covenant of Church has become the foundation of the autonomy community."It not only makes those who covenanted the Convention adore God unitedly,but also makes preparations for building up a new community and a new government"in America.

The American scholar,Vincent Ostrom,has pointed out:"The core idea of the American federal system is to form an autonomic relation social colony though the procedure of making covenants and uniting us together."[5]56The Declaration of Independence,which was praised by Marx as the first declaration of human rights,also elaborated covenant and right thoughts.The American thinks that the citizens have the obligation of being loyal only to the government that respects their own rights.And the people also have the right to overthrow the government if it does any harm to their basic rights.This kind of thought,that"loyalty is conditional and the relationship between people and governors is a kind of covenant,"[12]77is one of the main contents of American political cultures.

3.2 Total Depravity

This thought of so-called"Total Depravity"believes that after the disobedience of Adam and Eve,man inherits this"Original Sin"without exception.Man is born to be sinful,and human nature is always evil.If man had any chance to choose between good and evil,the latter would be the option all the time.This kind of thought impacted the form of government constitution profoundly.Since abusing one's power is man's nature,man can never be given absolute power.But for keeping a country in order,a government is obviously necessary.So the government,this"devil of necessity",has to be restricted in power.On this purpose,the fathers who founded the United States divided the power of the federal government into three parts:lawmaking,justice and administration,so that each section holds its own power bu never absolute and an interrelation of restriction and supervision is formed among them.

During the Independent War in America,Thomas Paine has claimed pridefully in his Common Sense that Americans"possess the power to rearrange the world".[4]22The victory of the Independent War and the establishment of the United States of America make Americans more conceived that they have the responsibility and obligation to supervise this world and act as a model for it."The American is the special'select of God'….It is beyond al doubts that God has already appointed us to inherit the wide territories of those political heretics in the future without blooding our hands.Those heretics will come over under the shadow of our ark….We are the pioneers of the world.And soon,other nations will be left by us at the far behind….The political Savior has already come.When we do a good thing for America,the world is benefited as well."
