1 词汇应用能力不强

Rive rs (1983) 认为“习得足够的词汇对成功地应用第二语言至关重要。没有大量的词汇做支撑, 我们就无法运用我们为了交流而习得的语法结构和功能。”尤其是英文写作, 更离不开词汇的支撑, 词汇应用不当, 会直接影响句子的连贯性。考生在平时的英语学习过程中都非常重视词汇的学习, 死记硬背课文生词表或四、六级考试词汇表也成了他们日常英语学习中的主旋律, 这样脱离语境而孤立地记忆单词最终结果, 就是单词记忆了不少, 但他们只了解单词汉语意思而分不清单词词性, 更不了解单词用法, 片面追求单词学习的数量而忽视了单词学习的质量。因此, 我们在09年12月份的作文中就看到这样的句子:

2 语法基础知识薄弱

参加大学英语四、六级考试的考生语法基础知识薄弱主要表现在动词时态以及复合句的运用上。正确使用动词时态能使句子和语篇具有良好的时序连贯, 但是考生在进行书面表达时, 由于考试气氛紧张等原因, 常常在动词的时态上出错, 造成时序混乱进而损害连贯。在简庆闽、陆建平等 (2003) 的采样分析中显示, 连贯性缺损的句子和段落有41%涉及动词时态错误。

文章是从句子写起的, 文章的好坏体现在句子写得好坏。英语四、六级作文的写作, 对于考生来说, 应注意两点:语法正确;句子多样化。与初级阶段学习或理解的语法不同, 大学英语教学要求要更深入一步, 从会用的角度出发, 写出的句子要语法正确。但相当一部分考生摆脱不了汉语思维的影响, 经常把汉语句子用英语逐字翻译出来, 结果造成句子语法错误, 而此类错误常常出现在复合句的应用上。

3 代词指代关系不明

在大学英语写作中, 代词在句子出现时必须有明确的指代关系。一般情况下, 除了无人称代词it以外, 代词应有其先行名词。如果句子中代词没有明确的指代关系, 句子就不能清晰连贯地表达其意义。换而言之, 代词指代不明常常会引起歧义或者误解。

例 (3) :I swim every day, for it is excellent exercise.

“如果连贯指的是把某些目前的表达和上面出现过的表达式联系起来, 那就是上指式。” (简庆闽、陆建平等, 2003) 。在此例中it就是上指式, 但在前句中无法找到其先行名词。此类错误也只是技术性而非知识性的错误, 只要通过老师的帮助指正, 自己平时写作时稍加注意, 就能纠正过来。但有的指代性错误是学生长期收到中文表达法则的影响而养成的习惯, 并将之移植于英文表达中。

此句有名词先行词, 我们很难发现其中的错误。其实, 如果此句出现在专家、学者或成功人士的文章中作为自己的经验型断言, 我们无可厚非。但如果出现在考生的作文中就不合适了, 因为考生本人也属于大学生的范畴, 不应该作为一个局外人发表断言, 所以把句中的you改为w e更为合适。这种错误不是机械性的, 而是考生的惯性汉式思维使然, 如果考生在英语学习中不改变自己的这种思维方式, 这样的错误还会经常出现。

4 句子关系逻辑混乱

句子关系是指句子内部或句子之间的语义关系和逻辑关系。句子关系可分为两大类:逻辑关系和对照关系。也就是说作文中任何句子都必须与相邻的句子建立至少一种关系, 因为句子管理是分析语篇连贯性的基础。如果作文中出现了不恰当的句子关系或句子关系缺失时, 就会给读者一种前言不搭后语的感觉, 也就说明作文中语篇缺失连贯性。因此, 考生在写作时就应该有意识地组织和安排语篇中的句子关系, 使语篇更具有逻辑性和连贯性。由于四、六级作文是应试作文, 写作要求不高, 作文的连贯性大都由逻辑连接词, 或称过渡性词语表达逻辑思维的各种模式, 如列举与例证、原因与结果、推论与总结等。用到的连接词也不多, 如however, therefore, whereas, and, but, ye t等, 而在所有这些逻辑连接词中, and的出现频率是最高的, 而使用错误率也是比较高的, 在这里就以and为例:

例 (5) :Creating a green environment is important to our s tudy and society.

并列连词and不仅在四、六级作文中, 而且在篇章词汇阅读理解和完型填空中也是判断正确选择的重要依据。And前后的词在词性、词义等方面要求非常严格, 而例 (5) 中的study和society很明显不属于一个范畴的词, 用and连接势必会影响句子的连贯性。

例 (6) :Work hard together, we will create a much greener world.

这是一个明显受汉式思维影响而写出的英语句子, 例 (6) 中第二分句前的and被忽略掉了。两个分句之间其实存在着因果关系, 但如果没有and连接, 二者之间的连贯性就会缺失。

四、六级作文语篇要连贯和如何建立连贯是学习与教学的重要环节, 但从考生的作文连贯性严重缺失以及得分率普遍不高来看, 这一环节并没有得到考生和教师应有的重视。相当一部分考生平时把精力主要放在了听力和阅读理解上, 他们认为作文随便写写就能得分, 而教师也普遍认为, 只要平时把句子语法和篇章结构讲深讲透, 学生写出高质量的作文是水到渠成。一篇好的作文, 要从布局、内容和连贯性等方面综合考虑, 否则, 再完美的语言都将失去意义。因此, 建立句子及语篇的连贯性策略应是我们今后英语写作教学中的着眼点。
